Federal And New Jersey Tax Filing Deadlines Moved Back

Both New Jersey and the Internal Revenue Service extended the state and federal income tax filing deadlines from April 15, 2021 to May 17, 2021.

This extension applies to individual taxpayers, including those who pay self-employment tax. Taxpayers don’t have to file a form to use this extension.

But individual estimated tax payments to New Jersey for the first quarter of 2021 are still due on April 15, according to the state Treasury Department.

Do I Have To Pay Taxes On Business Relief Loans

Paycheck Protection Program loans are exempt from federal and state taxes, and small businesses can deduct business expenses that were paid with tax-exempt loan proceeds for both state and federal tax purposes, under the federal appropriations act that reauthorized the PPP program and a February announcement by Murphy.

This decision is designed to help already beleaguered small businesses, which are the majority of recipients of these loans, Murphy said. Its no secret that New Jersey has been one of the hardest hit states by COVID-19 and our small businesses have shouldered the brunt of it. PPP loans helped many stay afloat and this move will provide added benefit to help them weather this storm.

Information Needed For Your Federal Income Tax Return

Each January, we mail an IRS Form 1099-G to individuals we paid unemployment benefits during the prior calendar year. The 1099-G form provides information you need to report your benefits. Use the information from the form, but do not attach a copy of the 1099-G to your federal income tax return because TWC has already reported the 1099-G information to the IRS. You can file your federal tax return without a 1099-G form, as explained below in Filing Your Return Without Your 1099-G.

    • Each file uploaded is treated independently of any other file uploaded.

    Wage Base And Tax Rates

NJ labor commissioner answers unemployment questions I Chat Box

UI tax is paid on each employee’s wages up to a maximum annual amount. That amount, known as the taxable wage base, generally increases by either $500 or $600 every year in New Jersey. In recent years, it has approached and then exceeded $32,000.

The state UI tax rate for new employers, also known as the standard beginning tax rate, also can change from one year to the next. In recent years, it has been between 3.0% and 3.5%. Established employers are subject to a lower or higher rate than new employers depending on an “experience rating.” This means, among other things, whether your business has ever had any employees who made claims for state unemployment benefits.

    • You should contact your state’s unemployment insurance program as soon as possible after becoming unemployed.
    • Generally, you should file your claim with the state where you worked. Rules For Unemployment Insurance Tax Liability

In New Jersey, most for-profit employers are liable for state UI taxes if one of the following is true:

    • the employer is subject to the Federal Unemployment Tax Act , or
    • the employer acquires another business that is already subject to New Jersey’s UI tax law.

To be liable under FUTA, and therefore also under New Jersey law, you generally must either:

    • employ someone during some portion of a day in 20 different calendar weeks within the calendar year, or
    • have a quarterly payroll of $1,500 or more.

New Jersey also has a rule stating that if you start a business, employ one or more individuals, and pay wages of $1,000 or more in a calendar year, you “may” be subject to the state’s UI tax and, in any case, must register with the DOR as discussed above. Different rules, not covered here, apply to agricultural workers, domestic workers, and employees of some non-profit organizations.

One piece of good news is that state UI tax payments generally can be credited against your FUTA taxes.
