CA EDD: Where To Find Your 1099g For Unemployment Taxes On Your UI Online Account

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, which was passed in March 2020, allocated funds for expanded unemployment benefits during COVID-19. This included the creation of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, Pandemic Unemployment Compensation , and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation .

Since the passage of the CARES Act, self-employed people have typically been eligible for unemployment benefits. Eligibility has varied from state to state, so its important to check with your local labor office to see how it has implemented the CARES Act.

States can provide PUA benefits to individuals who are self-employed. However, to qualify, you should not be able to apply for regular state unemployment benefits and be unemployed or unable to work due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The PUA program provides up to 39 weeks of benefits, but the benefits are only authorized through December 31, 2020. Notably, U.S. legislators could still extend PUA benefits in the future so people can use it for longer as the pandemic persists.

If at any point, a self-employed individual that is receiving PUA benefits is able to restart their business or take on new work, they must report that income to their state unemployment office. The benefit amount they receive may decline, but workers do not want to run into legal trouble for receiving benefits while also being back to work.

Why Is My Overpayment Which I Repaid Not Reported On My Form 1099g

The amount in the Benefits Repaid box of Table A or Table B is based on payments processed between January 1 and December 31 of the tax year.

Only cash repayments are reported on Form 1099G. Benefits taken from your claim to repay an overpayment are not cash repayments, and are not included in this box. Penalties and other collection costs are not repayments of a benefit overpayment, and are not reported on Form 1099G.

If you repaid part or all of an overpayment, the IRS allows you to deduct the repaid amounts on your income tax return. For more information on deducting an overpayment on your tax return, see the IRS Instructions or contact the IRS or a tax professional.

For additional information, visit Benefit Overpayment Services. To speak with a representative, call 1-866-401-2849, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. , except on state holidays.

Paycheck Protection Program loans are exempt from federal and state taxes, and small businesses can deduct business expenses that were paid with tax-exempt loan proceeds for both state and federal tax purposes, under the federal appropriations act that reauthorized the PPP program and a February announcement by Murphy.

This decision is designed to help already beleaguered small businesses, which are the majority of recipients of these loans, Murphy said. Its no secret that New Jersey has been one of the hardest hit states by COVID-19 and our small businesses have shouldered the brunt of it. PPP loans helped many stay afloat and this move will provide added benefit to help them weather this storm.

How Does Unemployment Insurance Usually Work

In the United States, federal and state unemployment insurance programs have existed in some form since the 1930s. Unemployment programs are administered at the state level. Still, the system is funded by businesses paying Federal Unemployment Tax Act taxes and State Unemployment Tax Act taxes.

These programs are designed to temporarily provide financial assistance when a worker loses their job and is currently looking for a new one. Workers who are laid off, have lost seasonal work or have been furloughed are allowed to apply for unemployment insurance.

In most U.S. states, laid-off workers are typically able to receive 26 weeks of unemployment benefits and a percentage of their average annual pay. How much a worker can receive depends on how much money they made in their last job and in what state they reside.

Once a worker has been laid off, they can then submit an unemployment claim to their state government. This claim formally notifies the government and the former employer that the worker is seeking unemployment insurance. In some cases such as the worker being fired for cause the former employer may deny the unemployment claim.

Approximately 20000 Unemployed Ohio Workers Still Waiting For 1099

UI Online: Access Tax Information/Form 1099G Using UI Online

CLEVELAND Approximately 20,000 unemployed Ohio workers are still waiting for their 1099-G forms that are needed to file taxes this year because the forms were not generated by the states system, according to Bill Teets, Communications Director, Ohio Jobs and Family Services.

In a statement to News 5, Teets wrote, We do not yet know why, and our primary focus is on resolving that issue so we can get those 20,000 reissued. It is a matter of identifying, and then testing potential fixes, which weve been doing for several days now.

Weve received close to 1,000 requests to reissue 1099s and have been keeping current with those, according to Teets.

Cleveland resident Greg McPherson, 62, said he is one of the unemployed Ohio workers still waiting for a 1099-G.

Its disgusting, he said. This is our government, who is supposed to be working for the people and theyre treating the people like dirt.

News 5 Investigators reached out to ODJFS about the missing tax forms after McPherson and another News 5 viewer alerted us to the issue.

Its now March 3 and I still havent gotten my 1099 from our government, he said. Its not fair. Why arent they held accountable when we are?

McPherson said he has called the state to ask for a new 1099-G form, but, so far, no one has been able to help him.

Every time I called I always got a different answer. Nobodys on the same page, he said. Its incompetence at its finest.
