Receiving unemployment benefits is no different from earning a paycheck when it comes to income taxes, at least under normal circumstances when the U.S. isnt struggling with a pandemic. Unemployment income is considered taxable income and must be reported on your tax return. It is included in your taxable income for the tax year.
While the federal government tweaked this rule in 2020 in response to COVID-19, those who collected unemployment income in 2021 should expect to pay the full taxes on those benefits. As of Nov. 29, 2021, the federal government and the Internal Revenue Service did not say that the rule would be tweaked again.
Heres what to know about paying taxes on unemployment benefits in tax year 2021, the return youll file in 2022.
When Will You Get Your Refund
The IRS said Friday that so far it has reviewed more than 3.1 million returns, with more than 2.8 million people receiving refunds.
The agency said those 2.8 million refunds would be sent out this week.
The IRS said it plans to issue the next round of refunds in mid-June.
But remember, this process could take some time as the IRS is reviewing 13 million tax returns.
The IRS said these corrections are being made automatically in a phased approach with the simplest returns getting tackled first, which includes single taxpayers with no child credits or refundable tax credits.
The next phase includes taxpayers with more complex returns, including couples filing jointly. The phases will continue through the end of the summer.
Effects Of The Unemployment Insurance Exclusion
Chances are, youve already paid your income taxes for 2020. But what this exclusion means is, if you paid taxes on unemployment insurance benefits that you received in 2020, you can get a refund on that money, both on your federal tax return and on your state one, if your state conformed with the federal unemployment tax exclusion.
The IRS is working through the tax returns of people who filed their income taxes before Congress passed the exclusion bill, and sending tax refunds to people who are entitled to them. To get that money refunded, you may not need to do anything at all. As many as 16 million Americans might be eligible for a refund. As of early November, the IRS had issued more than 11.7 million refunds totaling $14.4 billion. The IRS will send you a notice to let you know if youre affected.
Keep in mind, you arent going to get $10,200 refunded. You would be refunded the income taxes you paid on $10,200.
However, if you werent eligible to receive additional tax benefits predicated on your 2020 income, such as the earned income tax credit, and youre now eligible for those benefits because your 2020 taxable income is now lower due to the exclusion, you may need to file an amended federal tax return to get those additional benefits. The IRS can help you figure that out.
Intuit, which makes TurboTax software, has a list of which states are recommending that you file an amended return to receive the state income tax refund on unemployment compensation.

Child Tax Credit: July 15 Deposits
Some families received another form of stimulus aid on July 15 when the IRS deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.
Eligible families will receive up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid is due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan.
Families who qualify will receive $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.
Families may enjoy more of a tax break in coming years, if Mr. Bidens American Families Plan moves forward. Under that plan, the Child Tax Credits expansion would last through 2025, giving families an additional four years of bigger tax breaks for children.

If you received unemployment benefits last year and filed your 2020 tax return relatively early, you may find a check in your mailbox soon . Since May, the IRS has been sending tax refunds to Americans who filed their 2020 return and reported unemployment compensation before tax law changes were made by the American Rescue Plan.
The tax agency recently issued about 430,000 more refunds averaging about $1,189 each. That brings the total count to over 11.7 million refunds totaling $14.4 billion for the 2020 unemployment compensation exclusion.

Required Minimum Distributions Were Reimplemented
Once you reach age 72, you’re legally required to start making withdrawals from tax-advantaged retirement accounts like 401s and traditional IRAs. These required withdrawals are called required minimum distributions, or RMDs, and they’re subject to income tax.
The 2020 CARES Act waived RMDs for IRAs and retirement plans for that specific tax year, essentially offering a tax break to those 72 or older. But RMDs were required in the 2021 tax year, which means if you’re over 72, you were supposed to make a withdrawal from your retirement account before the end of 2021.
If you’re in that age group and did not withdraw the required amount , you may owe a 50% excise tax on the money you failed to withdraw.
How Are Unemployment Benefits Taxed
Unemployment benefits are designed to replace a portion of your regular wages. As such, the IRS treats them like any other wages and taxes them at your ordinary income tax rate.
Whether youll actually owe taxes on unemployment benefits, and the rate youll pay, depends on your overall tax situation and tax bracket.
The state that paid your unemployment benefits should send you a Form 1099-G showing how much unemployment income you received and how much taxes it withheld.
In March 2021, the American Rescue Plan provided some relief for people who received unemployment benefits in 2020. Taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income under $150,000 could exclude up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits from their taxable income. For this exclusion, your MAGI is your adjusted gross income minus your unemployment compensation.

However, this unemployment tax break applied only to 2020 tax returns. So if you collected unemployment benefits in 2021, you should expect 100% of your benefits to be included in your taxable income when you file your 2021 tax return.
In March, when the American Rescue Plan passed, many people had already filed returns and paid taxes on all of their benefits. Fortunately, the IRS didnt require taxpayers to file amended returns. It automatically sent unemployment tax refunds to eligible taxpayers who filed a tax return before the legislation was enacted.

Refunds For Unemployment Compensation
If you’re entitled to a refund, the IRS will directly deposit it into your bank account if you provided the necessary bank account information on your 2020 tax return. If valid bank account information is not available, the IRS will mail a paper check to your address of record. The IRS says it will continue to send refunds until all identified tax returns have been reviewed and adjusted.
The IRS will send you a notice explaining any corrections. Expect the notice within 30 days of when the correction is made. Keep any notices you receive for your records, and make sure you review your return after receiving an IRS notice.
The refunds are also subject to normal offset rules. So, the amount you get could be reduced if you owe federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debt, child support, spousal support, or certain federal non-tax debt . The IRS will send a separate notice to you if your refund is offset to pay any unpaid debts.
