How To Get Your Suta Tax Rate

When you become an employer, you need to begin paying state unemployment tax. To do so, sign up for a SUTA tax account with your state.

You can register as an employer online using your states government website. You might also be able to register for an account by mailing a form to your state. Each state has a different process for obtaining an account. Check your states government website for more information.

To register for an account, you need to provide information about your business, such as your Employer Identification Number. When you register for an account, you will obtain an employer account number.

Once registered, your state tells you what your contribution rate is. And, your state will also tell you what your states wage base is.

Many states give newly registered employers a standard new employer rate. The new employer rate varies by state.

Some states split new employer rates up by construction and non-construction industries. For example, all new employers receive a SUTA rate of 1.25% in Nebraska, and all new construction employers receive a SUTA rate of 5.4% in 2021.

If you live in a state that doesnt use a standard new employer rate, you must wait for your state to assign you your starting rate.

Your state will eventually change your new employer rate. The amount of time depends on the state. You may receive an updated SUTA tax rate within one year or a few years. Most states send employers a new SUTA tax rate each year.

Packers fans across the country submitted questions and hot takes about the game against the 49ers to Packers.com, and senior writer Mike Spofford responded to some of them. Here are a few:

Douglas from Bemidji, Minnesota: Just one game at a time, but I’d love to beat the 49ers and then the Bucs on the way to the Super Bowl and redeem the last two seasons.

MS: You and everyone else out there.

Mike from Baraboo: Which returning injured Packers player do you feel will have the biggest impact in the playoff run?

MS: I’ll stick with what I said a few weeks ago David Bakhtiari. Five sacks from the edge rushers in last year’s NFC title game still answers the question for me.

Dave from Comer, Georgia: How are the 49ers different from when we played them earlier in the year?

MS: I think they’ve gotten even more creative and versatile with how they use Deebo Samuel. He’s a handful.

What Is The Minimum Wage Wisconsin Unemployment Benefit

Virtually all states look at your recent work history and income over a one-year base period to determine your unemployment entitlement.

In Wisconsin, as in most states, the base period is the earliest four of the five full calendar quarters before you submitted your benefit claim.

For example, if you submitted your application in October 2021, the base period would be June 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021.

The prerequisite for this is that you have received wages for at least two quarters in the base period.

In addition, you must meet the minimum income threshold in your highest quarter, your three lowest quarters, and your entire base period.

    • You must be unemployed through no fault of your own to be eligible for unemployment benefit.
    • If you have been laid off, lost your job due to downsizing or were downsized for economic reasons, you will meet this requirement.
    • If you were fired because you did not have the skills required to do the job, or simply did not fit in, you are still likely to be eligible for benefits. For example, if you have been laid off for being inefficient or making honest mistakes at work , you will still be entitled to unemployment.

However, if your actions reach wrongdoing levels, you are not entitled to unemployment benefits. In Wisconsin, misconduct is behavior that shows a willful and material disregard for the interests of the employer or that is otherwise inconsistent with the standards that an employer can reasonably expect an employee to do.

    About State Unemployment Tax

When you have employees, you must pay federal and state unemployment taxes. These taxes fund unemployment programs and pay out benefits to employees who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.

Generally, unemployment taxes are employer-only taxes, meaning you do not withhold the tax from employee wages. However, some states require that you withhold additional money from employee wages for state unemployment taxes.

State unemployment tax is a percentage of an employees wages. Each state sets a different range of tax rates. Your tax rate might be based on factors like your industry, how many former employees received unemployment benefits, and experience.

You pay SUTA tax to the state where the work is taking place. If your employees all work in the state your business is located in, you will pay SUTA tax to the state your business is located in. But if your employees work in different states, you will pay SUTA tax to each state an employee works in.

States also set wage bases for unemployment tax. This means you will only contribute unemployment tax until the employee earns above a certain amount.

State unemployment taxes are referred to as SUTA tax or state unemployment insurance . Or, they may be referred to as reemployment taxes .

What Is The Unemployment Rate In Wisconsin

According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics , Wisconsins seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.9 percent in August 2021, down from 3.9 percent in July and a decrease of 6, 1 percent in August 2020.

Without seasonal adjustment, the rate was 4.0 percent in August, compared with 4.1 percent in July and 5.8 percent in August 2020.

At the height of the layoffs in April, Wisconsin lost nearly 440,000 jobs, an enormous number larger than the populations of the states second and third largest cities Madison and Green Bay, respectively combined.

With the January employment data, almost a third of those jobs have still not returned.

Wisconsin created a total of 11,100 jobs in January based on the latest data. But the state still has tens of thousands of jobs to catch up before it returns to pre-pandemic employment levels.

Weekend Roundup: Wisconsin Unemployment Hits Record Low Of 28 Percent

    Wisconsin Unemployment Rate
    • Saturday, January 22, 2022, 10:00am

Wisconsins unemployment rate hit a record low of 2.8 percent in December, after tying the previous low of 3 percent in November, the state Department of Workforce Development reported Thursday.

The state rate is below the national unemployment rate of 3.9 percent for December. Wisconsin gained 5,300 private sector jobs in December. The number of people counted as unemployed in Wisconsin, 86,200, also hit a record low, the department reported.

Hitting a new low comes amid a worker shortage both in the state and nationwide. Republicans who control the state Legislature unveiled a package of bills this week that would cut unemployment and other benefits as part of a strategy to get more people into the workforce.

Gov. Tony Evers has also devoted federal pandemic relief money toward the worker shortage problem, including $130 million for job training programs and local efforts to develop long-term solutions to the labor shortage and $60 million for workforce development grants.

Evers, who is up for reelection this year, said the news was worth celebrating and “evidence of the resilience and innovation of Wisconsinites across our state.”

How To Use The Unemployment Rate

Keep in mind that the unemployment rate is a lagging indicator. It tells you what has already happened, since employers only lay off workers after business slows down.

The unemployment rate isn’t lagging as much as usual because the pandemic is still creating sudden changes.

Companies resist hiring new workers when a recession is over until they can be sure that the economy will stay strong. The economy could improve for months, and the recession could be over before the unemployment rate drops. It’s not suitable for predicting trends, but it’s useful for confirming them.

County Unemployment Rate Tied For Lowest In State

Taylor County remains tied at having the lowest unemployment rate in the state. The Department of Workforce Development last week released the October unemployment rates compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showing Taylor County tied with Lafayette County at a 1.6% unemployment rate. The previous month Taylor County was at 1.9% and in October 2020 was at 2.7%.

The DWD notes that these totals are not seasonally adjusted. Seasonal adjustment is a statistical process of removing the seasonal component of a time series that is used when analyzing non-seasonal trends. For example, Taylor County has a significant percentage of people work in construction industries and typically there is a spike in unadjusted unemployment rates during the winter months when crews are not working.

According to the DWD, preliminary October 2021 unemployment rates declined in all 72 Wisconsin counties over the year and over the month. Thirty-eight of Wisconsins 72 counties experienced record low unemployment rates in the month of October.

The unemployment rate measures the percentage of people over the working age who arent working but who are available and actively looking for work.
