  • 3 Conclusion
  • Lack Of Adequate Education

Education is a fundamental building block. Therefore, without adequate education, the foundation is missing. This is by far the biggest challenge. This applies to both basic education and higher education.

    Basic Education

Developing and underdeveloped countries struggle more with it. Social-economic constraints primarily drive this. In many poor countries, children do not have access to primary education.

    Higher Education

Quality higher education is the cornerstone of good-paying jobs. We should orient it towards industry needs. And many times we do not gear it towards industry needs. In addition, higher education can be expensive. So not everyone can afford it. Very few countries provide free university education. .

Even before the pandemic hit, global economic growth had slowed. The COVID-19 crisis disrupted economic activities around the world and caused the worst recession since the Great Depression. In 2020, 8.8 per cent of global working hours were lost , equivalent to 255 million full-time jobs about four times the number lost during the global financial crisis in 2009. The pandemic has put workers in informal employment at risk, as they lack protection against illness or lockdowns. Young workers and women have been particularly affected by the crisis. With the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines and continued fiscal and monetary support, the United States of America and China are expected to experience strong growth in 2021. However, for many other countries, economic growth will remain below pre-pandemic trends for a prolonged period.

For many countries, the road to economic recovery may be a long, bumpy ride

For LDCs, real GDP increased by 4.8 per cent in 2019 and is expected to have decreased by 0.3 per cent in 2020 due to pandemic disruption. In 2021 and 2022, real GDP growth in LDCs is projected to pick up again reaching 4.0 and 5.0 per cent, respectively. However, it is expected to remain well below the 7 per cent target envisioned by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed workers in the total labor force. The unemployment rate includes workers who currently do not work, although they can do so. For 2021, the global unemployment rate is estimated to be between 6.3-6.5%, depending upon the source. The unemployment rate is a lagging indicator, meaning it responds to changing economic conditions rather than influencing or predicting them. When the economy grows at a healthy rate, the job market is plentiful and the unemployment rate drops. When the economy is experiencing a recession or other turbulence, the job market tends to retract and the unemployment rate rises in response.

At the time, the region had the highest youth population shares in the world, as well as the highest rates of youth unemployment.1, 2 These two factors generated a sense of urgency among policymakers regarding the need to create enough jobs to absorb the incoming flux of young workers.3 However, despite concerted policy efforts, by 2010, the region had failed to improve employment outcomes for its youthful population. Youth frustration grew over their social, economic, and political exclusion, exploding in 2011 into protests across the region.

Global Youth Unemployment Is On The Rise Again

    From ILO

GENEVA The International Labour Organization estimates that the global youth unemployment rate is expected to reach 13.1 per cent in 2016 and remain at that level through to 2017 .

The ILOs World Employment and Social Outlook 2016, Trends for Youth report shows that as a result, the global number of unemployed youth is set to rise by half a million this year to reach 71 million the first such increase in 3 years.

Of greater concern is the share and number of young people, often in emerging and developing countries, who live in extreme or moderate poverty despite having a job. In fact, 156 million or 37.7 per cent of working youth are in extreme or moderate poverty .

The alarming rise in youth unemployment and the equally disturbing high levels of young people who work but still live in poverty show how difficult it will be to reach the global goal to end poverty by 2030 unless we redouble our efforts to achieve sustainable economic growth and decent work. This research also highlights wide disparities between young women and men in the labour market that need to be addressed by ILO member States and the social partners urgently, said Deborah Greenfield, ILO Deputy Director-General for Policy.

    Unequal opportunities

The challenge is particularly acute in Southern Asia, the Arab States and Northern Africa, where female youth participation rates are, respectively, 32.9, 32.3 and 30.2 percentage points lower than those of male youth in 2016.

    Causes Of Unemployment In India

This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it.

According to Alakh Sharma, the causes of high unemployment and under-employment in India are the subject of intense debate among scholars. A group of scholars state that it is a consequence of “restrictive labour laws that create inflexibility in the labour market”, while organized labour unions and another group of scholars contest this proposed rationale. India has about 250 labour regulations at central and state levels, and global manufacturing companies find the Indian labour laws to be excessively complex and restrictive compared to China and other economies that encourage manufacturing jobs, according to the economist Pravakar Sahoo. According to Sharma, the Indian labour laws are “so numerous, complex and even ambiguous” that they prevent a pre-employment economic environment and smooth industrial relations. India needs “labour market reforms that address the needs of both employers and workers”, and it should rewrite its labour laws that protect its workers, provides social security for workers between jobs, and makes compliance easier for the industry. According to The Economist the Indian labor laws are inflexible and restrictive, and this in combination with its poor infrastructure is a cause of its unemployment situation.
