Why Has Ides Come Under So Much Criticism

IDES is being criticized on both sides of the aisle for slow response times for receiving service, particularly for people calling in for assistance. Sen. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, noted that due to the glacially slow response, some people have given up on receiving their benefits.

“I personally believe that many of my constituents and, I’m sure, many of the citizens of Illinois that have filed, have just given up,” Rose said. “This was like some Franz Kafka novel combined with Atlas Shrugged. When they needed us the most, they were left waiting and have since moved on.”

Richards said that the agency can normally get to calls in 1-2 weeks. For claims that are moving through the system, however, she said that it could take 4-6 weeks for the agency to get back to people.

Illinois Unemployment Notices From Ides Cause Confusion Worry In Those Told They Owe Thousands

Illinois unemployment recipients say they’ve received notice from IDES about overpayment and that they’re on the hook for thousands of dollars.

CHICAGO — People who received Illinois unemployment help during the pandemic are now being told they owe thousands of dollars back. Some are being told to cough up as much as $20,000.

State and federal programs are supposed to help most people who received unemployment overpayments by granting them forgiveness. However, the I-Team has heard from many people saying they’re either being denied those requests or they’re just not getting a clear answer.

“I, like many people, was hit hard and I can’t take another hit like that,” Lavinia Redmond said.

Redmond was a bus driver for Chicago Public Schools who was laid off during the pandemic.

“It’s incredibly frustrating, it’s very stressful,” said John Sweeney, who was laid off from an educational non-profit.

They both applied for unemployment and qualified, but months later, even after the benefits ended, Redmond and Sweeney each said they got letters to pay back all of their federal and state unemployment without much explanation. Sweeney is expected to pay back $19,000 and Redmond told the I-Team, “They want $20,799 dollars back, every single cent, even though I was approved for it.”

The I-Team has received dozens of emails and calls from people who are trying to get relief, but they can’t get answers or they’re still getting bills they say they owe the money back.

When And How Will I Be Paid

Benefits are paid for calendar weeks that begin on Sunday and end on Saturday. You will be assigned a call day, certification day or appointment after the end of a calendar week and you cannot be paid until you have certified that you have met all eligibility requirements during that week. Certification takes place by telephone through an Illinois unemployment number or online on a bi-weekly basis. You must certify every two weeks to receive your benefits.

Claimants can choose to receive benefits by direct deposit or by the use of a debit card. Payments are typically deposited into a specified account two business days after the claimant has certified for benefits. Claimants automatically receive benefits by debit card unless they register for direct deposit at IDES.Illinois.gov.
