What To Wait For After You File Your Unemployment Claim

About a week after applying, you will obtain a letter stating if you are eligible and, if so, how much you will collect weekly as your benefit. In case you do not qualify for benefits, the letter will clarify why and tell you what you must do if you wish to appeal the verdict.

Once you have qualified to collect benefits, you must claim your weekly benefits every 2 weeks. The initial letter you obtain will give you a date on which you must call or go online and answer a few questions about your continued eligibility. Failure to reclaim your benefits every two weeks will hold up the payment of benefits to you.

Moreover, in the state of Florida, the first week of unemployment is not considered eligible for unemployment benefits. As such, your first date to claim your weekly benefits will be 3weeks after you initially claimed unemployment benefits, and then the benefits paid out will only be for 2 weeks.

When Will Your Unemployment Claim Be Processed How Many Weeks Can You Receive Benefit Payments

After your claim is filed and accepted, the state of Florida requires that you go through a waiting week during which no benefits will be paid to you. Overall, it will take about three to four weeks for you to receive your first payment. You can receive benefits for anywhere between 12 and 23 weeks depending on Floridas current unemployment rate.

Benefits will vary for each claimant and will be based on earnings from your base period. Your base period is based on the first four completed quarters within the past 18 months.

If your claim begins between these dates: Your base period will be:

More on Florida Unemployment Claim Weeks

Currently, the state of Florida pays unemployment benefits by dividing your wages in your highest base period quarter by 26, and the maximum benefit anyone can earn is $275 per week.

  • You must have earned a minimum of $3,400 in the base period of your Florida unemployment claim and your highest quarter wages cannot be more than 1.5x of the entire base period wages.
  • If you are hired for a full-time job, your benefits will end. But if you are hired for a part-time job, your benefits may still continue to some degree. The amount of your wages will be used to offset the amount of unemployment benefits you receive.

Coronavirus Florida: State Releases Instructions To Apply For Federal Unemployment Benefit

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity has released the eagerly awaited instructions for gig workers, self-employed and independent contractors o apply for the unemployment benefit available from the federal government.

According to instructions released this week, workers who were laid off, furloughed or had their hours cut due to the coronavirus pandemic must file for state unemployment benefits before filing for assistance from the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, PUA.

The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program provides unemployment benefits to workers who may not otherwise be eligible for benefits in Florida, including independent contractors and people who are self-employed.

Workers whose applications for state benefits were denied may still be eligible for federal benefits. To apply, workers should create or login to the CONNECT account. After answering several questions, workers will then be prompted in CONNECT to file a PUA application.

DEO has also released a fact sheet that provides PAU benefit details – including the amount and duration of benefits – for a variety of different job-loss scenarios. For some workers, the $600 weekly benefit will be paid in addition to the states maximum $275 weekly benefit for a total of $875 a week.
