Ohio Department Of Job And Family Services

Unfortunately, I have had the great misfortune of dealing with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. I’m sure after reading this many of you will be able to relate to the lack of honesty from most of the agents and the ability to get anything handled with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. This article will touch on numerous divisions such as filing weekly claims, and re-determination, RESEA, and the processing departments. While my experience will be different from yours the total lack of accountability on their end will be relevant for most Ohioans.

Am I Eligible For Unemployment Benefits In Ohio

An unemployed worker may be eligible for Ohio UI benefits if they meet the following criteria:

  • You are completely or partially unemployed.
  • You worked at least 20 weeks for a covered employer and earned an income of at least $243 within the base period defined as four out of the last five completed calendar quarters
  • You are unemployed through no fault of your own for example, because of a layoff or reduction in force
  • If you are connected to a previous unemployment claim that has since expired, you must have worked for a covered employer since the beginning of the previous claim year this reestablishes you as an Ohio worker.

While a final determination regarding your eligibility cant be made until your unemployment claim is reviewed, you should apply for UI benefits if you believe you meet these criteria.

Laid Off Or Furloughed Because Of Coronavirus Know Your Unemployment Benefits

Americans are increasingly worried about how they are going to pay their bills as coronavirus forces businesses to close and costs millions of people their jobs.

A record 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment insurance last week. The surge in jobless claims is being fueled by the growing number of companies, including Marriott, Macy’s and GE, that have announced layoffs or furloughs as they try to weather the economic storm caused by the pandemic.

To help struggling Americans, Congress passed a $2.2 trillion federal relief package last week, including a big boost to unemployment insurance benefits that allow more people to qualify and offers more money for a longer period of time.

But Henry Vitner, who first filed for unemployment insurance in mid-March, says getting that promised financial help hasn’t been easy.

It just feels like this system is made not to help people but to get people so frustrated that they just give up,” says Vitner, 23, who put in a jobless claim when business began drying up at the pet sitting shop he works for in San Francisco.

He’s been told he qualifies for benefits, but not how much money he can get. And Vitner’s spent hours on the phone only to be disconnected before he received any answers.

So how do you file? If you work in one state and live in another, where do you put in your claim? Will the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act from the government, grant more access to benefits, or make it more difficult?

How Do I Apply For Ohio Unemployment Benefits

Ohio offers two different methods for applying for UI benefits. You can file online at any time. You can also call toll-free at 877-644-6562 or TTY 614-387-8408 to make your claim by phone. ODJFS agents are available to assist you Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Once your claim is submitted, you will receive confirmation and information about the next steps by mail or e-mail. Your claim will be assigned to a specific processing center, based on the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Ohio Unemployment Weekly Claims

In order to continue obtaining an unemployment check every week you must file a weekly claim, also known as a weekly certification or continued claim.

  • The reason of filing a weekly claim is to tell the unemployment agency that you:
  • Are at present looking for work.
  • Have not done any work this week.
  • Have not made any money this week
  • Have not found another job.
  • Want to obtain an unemployment check or payment this week.

Therefore, it is very important to file your weekly claim every week to keep receiving your unemployment check.

If you delay in filing your weekly claim, you may not get your unemployment check on time.

  • Shaylasays:

I applied for benefits on 2/28, I filed my first weekly claim on 2/29 and havent received benefits yet because I have not been approved yet. However, my next scheduled weekly claim was supposed to be tomorrow 3/8, but all of the suddenly it says no weekly claims can be filed? All weeks it has told me my next scheduled filing date and now its gone. Does that mean I got denied? They just asked me my last set of questions yesterday so I shouldnt be denied.

  • It takes a little bit before you get it And you file bi weekly

  • Shayla,

Unless a Letter of Determination is issued, we cannot assume denial/acceptance. I suggest you speak to a claims representative to seek clarification.

  • Jeannie,

Only the Unemployment Office would be able to tell you that. If you think its not justified, you can ask for an Adjudicator.

  • Managing Your Unemployment Benefits

The process of qualifying for UI benefits isnt complete after your initial claim is submitted its an ongoing process. After filing your initial UI benefits claim, you must continue to file weekly or biweekly claims for as long as you want to receive unemployment compensation.

The easiest and most streamlined way to submit your weekly benefit claim is through Ohios online portal. You can also file by phone at 877-OHIO-JOB or TTY at 888-642-8203. Your responses to the questions presented when you file a weekly benefit claim determine whether you meet eligibility requirements for the previous week. Failing to file timely claims could result in a denial of payment.

Other Activities That Will Meet Your Weekly Work Search Requirements

    For Unemployment Insurance through OhioMeansJobs.com

Federal and state law requires individuals who are receiving unemployment benefits to actively search for suitable work each week that they file for benefits.

How people search for work and secure employment in todays labor market is different from how it was done in the past, due to advances in technology and changing labor markets. Ohio requires unemployment claimants to meet their weekly active search for suitable work requirements by conducting two work search activities each week and providing documentation/information about the work search activity on each weekly claim filed.

Examples of acceptable work search activities include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Making an application for work
    • Submitting a resume to an employer
    • Completing your Reemployment Services & Eligibility Assessment activities assigned
    • Creating and maintaining a reemployment plan in OhioMeansJobs.com

The Ohio Department Of Job And Family Services

Let’s chat about the lack of communication on the OH | ID process for new enrollees. There is none. You are expected to figure all of this out on your own. Needless to say, it is all very confusing to newcomers. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has done everything in its power to make it impossible to speak with a live person that can actually help with issues that come up.

They have a general number 1-877-644-6562 that you get and even if you get your local office’s number it still dumps you into the same system. They have tons of phone numbers but they all lead to the same place. Employees that do not have the same answers for the same problem that occurs and reoccurs numerous times. Once you actually get to an agent you will get a different answer every time to the same issue. You will also be asked to send them the same documents week after week. This is another way they try to stop your unemployment benefits. Some of them will try to help but because of the processes or lack of processes that they do not have in place nothing gets done! Stand by, Lie and Deny is the most common practice for this government agency.

In closing, you can expect to be on the phone with them every day for hours and get nothing accomplished. If you even try to interrupt them from their usual I understand but…. explanation they will turn on you and deny anything they can and put you back at square one with your case. So it will be another 21 days of waiting for something they are too lazy to deal with. Note: Be sure to keep all of the agent’s numbers and names and the dates you spoke with them on. Honestly, it is like a full-time job dealing with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Maybe they should be paying us a salary for having to spend hours each week dealing with their incompetence!!!
