Coronavirus Unemployment Benefits: Do You Qualify?

To apply for unemployment benefits, you will need:

  • Your Social Security number
  • FEIN number
  • If you donât have a FEIN, use employer details from paystub

Some workers will need to provide additional information:

  • Non-U.S. citizens must provide their Alien Registration Number or work authorization form
  • Military employees must provide their DD-214 Member copy 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8
  • Federal employees must provide SF 8 or SF 50
  • Union members must provide the unionâs name, hall number and phone number

If you want to use direct deposit, you must provide your bank account number and routing number. You can also request a Reemployment Assistance debit card.

Where Do I File For Unemployment Insurance

Unemployment insurance is a joint state-federal program that provides cash benefits to eligible workers. Each state administers a separate unemployment insurance program, but all states follow the same guidelines established by federal law.

Appeal A Denial Of Benefits

If you were denied unemployment benefits, you may file an appeal online. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity refers to those seeking benefits as Claimants. Claimants, employers, and authorized representatives may appeal a decision that was not made in their favor.

You must wait until after a determination is mailed or delivered to file an appeal. The determination will also contain instructions on how to file your appeal after a denial of benefits.

How to Qualify for Unemployment Benefits

The qualifying period is the shorter of:

  • the 52-week period immediately before the start date of your claim. or
  • the period from the start of a previous benefit period to the start of your new benefit period, if you applied for benefits earlier and your application was approved in the last 52 weeks
  • Exception: In some cases, the qualifying period may be extended to a maximum of 104 weeks if you werent employed in insurable employment or if you werent receiving EI benefits.

    Until September 24, 2022 Temporary

    You only need to have accumulated 420 hours of insurable employment during your qualifying period to qualify for EI benefits.

    If you were assessed a violation, you may need more insurable hours to qualify for benefits. The required amount rises based on the number and seriousness of misrepresentations that have been recorded in the 5-year period before the start of your claim.

    After September 24, 2022

    You will need between 420 and 700 hours of insurable employment based on the unemployment rate in your area during the qualifying period to qualify for regular benefits:

    If you received a notice of violation regarding prior EI benefit periods, the number of insurable hours required to qualify is increased.

    COVID-19 update: Emergency rules have been adopted for workers and employers affected by COVID-19.

    To determine if you are eligible for unemployment benefits we examine:

    1. Whether you worked enough hours in your base year:

    • You must have worked at least 680 hours in your base year.
    • At least some wages must have been earned in Washington, unless you recently left the military and are currently located in Washington state.

    2. The reason you’re unemployed or not working full time. We’ll consider whether you:

    • Are on a leave of absence
    • Are still working

    To Be Eligible For Benefits You Must:

  • Have sufficient earnings in your base period.
  • Your benefits are based on the amount of earnings paid to you from all employers during a recent 52-week period of time. This is called your base period. Commissions, bonuses, overtime, vacation pay, severance pay , and wages earned in other states are included. Earnings from self-employment are usually not included.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • If you are not a citizen, your authorization to work will be subject to verification.
  • Be unemployed, or working substantially reduced hours, through no fault of your own.

  • Actively seek suitable employment each week.
  • Actively seeking suitable employment means you are taking action each week towards finding a job that matches your skills, experience, training, and mental and physical ability.
  • At first this may be assessing what skills you have and what type of work you should pursue. You may create or update a resume, see a job counselor, go to job search workshops, and so on.
  • The goal is to find appropriate job openings each week and present yourself to those employers as a good candidate.
  • Be able and willing to begin suitable work without delay when offered.

    How Much Unemployment Will I Get In Tn

    Unemployment Insurance is a benefit program funded by Tennessee employers for workers who have lost their job by no fault of their own. Eligible claims may receive up to $275 per week in benefit payments. Qualified applicants are only eligible for a maximum of 26 weeks of unemployment insurance in a year.

    Requirements For Qualifying For Unemployment

    Eligibility requirements to qualify for unemployment compensation vary from state to state. However, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are two main criteria that must be met in order to qualify:

    Weekly Claim Certification filing Online You may file your current weekly claim certification online through MDES Online Unemployment Services. You must login with your user id and password or establish a new user id and password if you are not a current user. You may file online outside normal business hours.

    Earnings And Tenure Requirements

    To collect unemployment benefits, you must have some connection to the workforce. Benefits aren’t available to those who have been out of work for a long time or have only held very limited jobs . In other words, your unemployment must be temporary.

    States determine whether you’ve met this requirement by looking at your earnings, hours worked, or both, during the “base period.” In almost every state, the base period is a one-year period, consisting of the earlier four of the last five complete calendar quarters before you applied for unemployment. If, for example, you apply for unemployment benefits in August of 2011, the base period would be April 1, 2010, through March 31, 2011.

    Some states require applicants to have worked at least a minimum amount of time during the base period to collect benefits.     I Am About To Exhaust My Regular Unemployment Compensation Benefits What Kinds Of Relief Does The Cares Act Provide For Me

    Under the CARES Act states are permitted to extend unemployment benefits by up to 13 weeks under the new Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program. PEUC benefits are available for weeks of unemployment beginning after your state implements the new program and ending with weeks of unemployment ending on or before December 31, 2020. The program covers most individuals who have exhausted all rights to regular unemployment compensation under state or federal law and who are able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work as defined by state law. Importantly, the CARES Act gives states flexibility in determining whether you are actively seeking work if you are unable to search for work because of COVID-19, including because of illness, quarantine, or movement restrictions.

    In addition, if you have exhausted the 13 weeks of additional benefits available under the PEUC program, you may be eligible to continue receiving benefits under the PUA program. PUA benefits are available for a period of unemployment of up to 39 weeks, meaning that if you have exhausted regular UC and PEUC benefits in fewer than 39 weeks, you may be eligible to receive assistance under PUA for the remaining weeks within PUAs 39 week period.

    What You Need To Know

    • Update 12/29/20: The federal government has extended the federal unemployment benefit programs available through the CARES Act for an additional 11 weeks. Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation will be available through March 14, 2021, with qualified claimants benefits fully phasing out by April 5, 2021. Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation benefits will resume with $300 weekly payments until March 14, 2021.

    How Much Will My Florida Unemployment Benefits Pay

    The weekly payment amount you receive during unemployment will vary from person to person. The only way to be sure of your benefit amount is to submit a claim.

    The state determines your weekly benefit payments based on your previous earnings during employment. In 2020, you can receive a maximum of $275 per week for 12 weeks. You are entitled to a maximum benefit amount of $3,300.

A gig economy worker, such as a driver for a ride-sharing service, is eligible for PUA provided that he or she is unemployed, partially employed, or unable or unavailable to work for one or more of the qualifying reasons provided for by the CARES Act. For example, a driver for a ride-sharing service may be forced to quit his or her job if he or she was diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical professional, and although the driver no longer has COVID-19, the illness caused health complications that render the driver objectively unable to perform his or her essential job functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation.     Self-employment assistance programs help unemployed workers start their own small businesses. Delaware, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, and Oregon offer this program.

    What Is An Offer Of Suitable Employment And How Is It Connected To Unemployment Insurance Eligibility

    Most state unemployment insurance laws include language defining suitable employment. Typically, suitable employment is connected to the previous jobs wage level, type of work, and the claimants skills.

    Refusing an offer of suitable employment without good cause will often disqualify individuals from continued eligibility for unemployment compensation.

    For example, if an individuals former employer calls the individual back to work after having temporarily laid the individual off for reasons related to COVID-19, the individual would very likely have to accept the offer to return to work, or jeopardize his or her eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits, absent some extenuating circumstance, such as if the individual tested positive for COVID-19. The job an individual held before the spread of COVID-19 will constitute, in the vast majority of cases, suitable employment for purposes of unemployment insurance eligibility.
