ID.ME speaks out for the first time regarding unemployment account lockouts and wait times

These statements report the total amount of benefits paid to a claimant in the previous calendar year for tax purposes. The amount reported is based upon the actual payment dates, not the week covered by the payment or the date the claimant requested the payment. The amount on the 1099-G may include the total of benefits from more than one claim.

Withholding Taxes From Your Payments

If you are receiving benefits, you may have federal income taxes withheld from your unemployment benefit payments. Tax withholding is completely voluntary withholding taxes is not required. If you ask us to withhold taxes, we will withhold 10 percent of the gross amount of each payment before sending it to you.

To start or stop federal tax withholding for unemployment benefit payments:

  • Choose your withholding option when you apply for benefits online through Unemployment Benefits Services.
  • Review and change your withholding status by logging onto Unemployment Benefits Services and selecting IRS Tax Information from the Quick Links menu on the My Home page.
  • Review and change your withholding status by calling Tele-Serv and selecting Option 2, then Option 5.

Nj Income Tax Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

You are required to use your Social Security number or ITIN for identification purposes on your New Jersey tax return. You must use the same identification number that you use for federal income tax purposes.

If you are not eligible for a Social Security number, you must file federal Form W-7 with the Internal Revenue Service to get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number .

If you will know your identification number by the return due date, you should file your Income Tax return the same way as you are filing for federal income tax purposes.

If you have applied to the IRS, but have not received a Taxpayer Identification Number by the return due date, you will need to provide a copy of Form W-7 when you file your New Jersey return. You also could consider filing an extension, and submit your return once you receive your identification number. If you choose to file an extension, remember that there is no extension of time to pay the tax due. You must meet the eligibility requirements for your extension to be granted.

Note: You cannot use a copy of Form W-7 in place of a valid Social Security number, ITIN, or ATIN for a dependent.

What If I Earned More Than $10200 In Unemployment

New Jersey does not tax unemployment insurance payments, but they are subject to federal income tax.

However, under the federal stimulus bill called the American Rescue Plan, certain New Jersey workers aren’t required to pay taxes on up to $10,200 in unemployment benefits received last year. You and your spouse can each claim that amount, meaning a couple could claim up to $20,400 in tax-exempt unemployment benefits if they received that much.

The tax benefit applies to people with incomes below $150,000, and applies to benefits through new federal unemployment programs created under the various stimulus programs, and traditional jobless benefits through the state unemployment fund.

But the tax exemption only allows each individual to claim up to $10,200. So if one spouse received $15,000 in jobless benefits, and the other received $5,000, the exclusion would be $15,200, not $18,000.

For IRS guidance on how to claim the tax benefit, visit .
