Learn Where To Register For Unemployment Benefits In Minnesota
Knowing when and where to apply for unemployment in MN can make the unemployment registration process faster and easier. Qualified residents can file for an unemployment claim online or by phone. The online application for unemployment is faster, but call center interpreters are available for non-English-speaking applicants, in languages like Spanish, Hmong and Somali.
Former workers can apply for unemployment benefits by phone Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Applicants should start unemployment registration no later than 4 p.m. to have sufficient time for completion. They will enter information when prompted during the first portion of the phone application and will finish by speaking to a customer service representative.
The online application for unemployment is available Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Applicants should start before 5:30 p.m. to allow enough time to complete and review the unemployment EDD application before the daily deadline. Each page of the unemployment registration form must be completed within 30 minutes, or applicants will be automatically logged off the site.
Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension
Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation is a federal extension program for people who have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits. PEUC was created by the CARES Act on March 27, 2020.
Under the original text of the CARES Act, PEUC benefits were available for a maximum of 13 weeks and set to expire on December 26, 2020. Congress has extended the PEUC program several times since then.
The week of August 29 through September 4, 2021 will be the last week for which you can be paid PEUC benefits. You will be able to request payment for that week on or after September 5, 2021. Refer to for more information.
Types Of Disability Policies

Amount And Duration Of Unemployment Benefits In Minnesota
The DEED determines your weekly benefit amount. Your weekly benefit amount will be about 50% of your average weekly wage during the base period, up to a maximum that changes every year, depending on the state’s average weekly wage. The best way is to make an appeal by phone. Its known as an appeal, but its not as intimidating as that might sound. It may take a while to get through, but your appeal will be reviewed, and the UI office will get in touch with you as quickly as possible. Remember to call on days other than Monday, and days following a major announcement from the state leadership , as those days have the highest call volumes. Calling in the afternoons also seems to be faster.

No. You will need to if you are identifying your employer, but not as far as where the form is asking for your social security number. You are applying for these benefits personally.

Can I Work While I Am Getting Unemployment
You can work part-time while getting unemployment, but the amount of your wages is taken out of your unemployment money. This is how it works:
- If you work less than 32 hours OR if the hours at your job were cut to below 32 hours and you now earn less than your weekly unemployment amount, you can get a partial payment.
- If you work 32 or more hours in a week or if your gross earnings for a week are the same as or more than your weekly unemployment amount, you won’t get unemployment for that week.
It is really important for you to report all of your earnings and other income to the Unemployment Office. Report your earnings from all jobs, even temporary or part-time jobs. Report the earnings even if you think the Unemployment Office already knows about the job.
If you do not report all of your earnings or other income, you will get an overpayment. You have to repay this overpayment back to the Unemployment Office, plus interest. You may also have to pay a fraud penalty.

If you are unemployed for any reason other than lack of work, Minnesota law requires that we follow a process to determine if you are eligible for benefits.

How Much Money Will I Receive In Unemployment Insurance
Your weekly benefit amount is roughly half of your average weekly wage, up to a maximum of $740. You’ll receive the higher of:
- 50% of your average weekly wage during the entire base period, up to a maximum of 66.7% of the state’s average weekly wage , or
- 50% of your average weekly wage during your highest-earning quarter of the base period, up to a maximum of 43% of the state’s average weekly wage

How Do I File For Unemployment Benefits In Minnesota
You should file a Minnesota unemployment application as soon as you are terminated from your job. Because the process can take several weeks, it is important to get started as soon as possible.
1. During the Minnesota unemployment application process youll need to supply the following information:
- Mailing address and phone number
- Drivers license or other government issued identification number
- Social Security number
- Employment history for the past 18 monthsemployer name, address, and telephone number, dates of employment , wage rate, reason you stopped working there
2. You can file your unemployment claim online through Minnesotas UI website. UIMN also offers limited phone and TTY service if needed.
3. After up you file a Minnesota unemployment application, know that there is a waiting period of up to three weeks. After this time, if approved, you can begin receiving benefits. Note: Due to the increased volume of claims during the COVID-19 pandemic, wait times may take longer than usual.
4. If you have been approved, your Minnesota unemployment compensation will be delivered weekly. You can receive up to $740 per week depending on how much you made while previously working.
5. Minnesota unemployment laws require you to provide proof that youre searching for new work. This can be done online through the Minnesota unemployment website or over the phone. DEED maintains a list of industries and businesses that are hiring during COVID-19.

You must be out of work through no fault of your own to qualify for unemployment benefits.
Collecting Unemployment After a Layoff
If you were laid off, lost your job in a reduction-in-force , or got “downsized” for economic reasons, you will meet this requirement.
Collecting Unemployment After Being Fired
If you were fired because you lacked the skills to perform the job or simply weren’t a good fit, you’ll still likely be eligible to receive benefits. For example, if you were fired for being inefficient or making honest mistakes at work , you will still be eligible for unemployment.
However, if your actions rise to the level of “misconduct,” you will not be eligible to receive unemployment. In Minnesota, misconduct means any intentional or careless conduct that shows a substantial lack of concern for the employment or that is a serious violation of standards that an employer can reasonably expect from the employee. The following are examples of misconduct:
- repeatedly being late or absent without a valid excuse
- showing up to work under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- violating company rules
- theft, violence, or harassing conduct.
