How To Appeal A Denial Of Unemployment Benefits In Georgia
If your claim for unemployment is denied, you have 15 days to appeal the decision with the Appeals Tribunal. Your request for appeal must be in writing and mailed or faxed to a GDOL Career Center.
After receiving your appeal request, the GDOL will schedule a hearing before the Appeals Tribunal. At your hearing, the Appeals Tribunal will receive evidence from both you and your employer. The Appeals Tribunal will then issue a written decision and send you a copy by mail.
If you disagree with the decision, you may file an appeal with the Board of Review by the date stated in the Appeals Tribunal’s decision. The Board of Review will review the entire record, but will not hold another hearing. If you disagree with the Board of Review’s decision, you may appeal to the Georgia Superior Court in the county in which you worked.

The Labor Department will issue you a Monetary Determination, which will include information on the amount of weekly benefits you would get if your application is granted. It will take between two and three weeks for you to get your reimbursement once you submit your claim. If the state requires further information before making payment, there may be a resulting delay.
Who Is Eligible For Unemployment Benefits Under The Cares Act
You typically have had to receive a W-2 form, meaning you’re paid a salary by an employer, to qualify for unemployment insurance. Yet the CARES Act expanded the insurance program to cover a broader set of the work force. Under the new program, called Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, the following workers also qualify:
- Self-employed individuals, which includes independent contractors and gig economy workers
- People without sufficient work history
- People seeking part-time work
- Existing claimants who have maxed out their unemployment benefits
Assistance is available for periods of unemployment between January 27, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Even if you’re unsure whether you qualify for benefits, you should apply through your state anyway. Since September 6, 2021, these benefits have no longer been available. That means:
- Benefits are no longer available to the millions of gig workers, contractors, and freelancers who were receiving unemployment through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.

Are Coronavirus Unemployment Benefits Still Available
As of September 6, 2021, the answer is no. The special pandemic programs Congress created to help those who have lost work due to COVID-19 have now expired. These programs included:

Whos Eligible For Unemployment Benefits In Georgia
If youve lost your job or suffered a reduction in income, you may be eligible to claim unemployment insurance benefits from the Georgia Department of Labor .

- You are self-employed, a freelancer, or a gig worker whose business has been adversely affected by COVID-19.
Pandemic Unemployment Benefits Have Expired
Although additional money — $300 extra per week — was available under the federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program, that program expired on September 6, 2021. For weeks of unemployment starting on September 6 or later, these extra benefits will no longer be paid.
A different federal program — Pandemic Unemployment Assistance — made benefits available temporarily to workers who were not eligible for traditional unemployment benefits, including freelancers, gig workers, and other contractors. That program also expired on September 6, 2021.
