School Employees / Educators
School employees and educators may be entitled to collect unemployment insurance but have a different criteria to determine eligibility for unemployment insurance.
Eligibility
Professional and non-professional employees of educational institutions, educational service agencies and certain other educational employers may be eligible for unemployment ONLY if they do not have a contract or if their employer has not provided written reasonable assurance of their employment for the following year, academic term or for the period following a school vacation. State law requires each educational institution to provide reasonable assurance in writing to those individuals who will be unemployed during the summer and will return to work once the summer break or vacation period ends. If teachers, professional and non-professional educational employees DO have a contract or written reasonable assurance of employment, they are ineligible to collect unemployment insurance benefits using their educational wages during the vacation period or the period between academic terms.

While you may not need to have your documents when you initially file for unemployment, it is important to keep in mind that you will need to submit documents in order to complete your unemployment application. If you choose to file for an unemployment claim without your documents it will not reduce the amount of time you receive your benefits, but it may delay when you get them. Is There An Unemployment Waiting Period
Unemployment insurance waiting periods are 100% state-driven. Many states have what is known as a “waiting period,” otherwise referred to as a “waiting week” as part of their unemployment insurance laws.
For example, in New York State, you must serve an unpaid waiting period equivalent to one full week of unemployment benefits before you receive payments. Please be advised that a call waiting signal could interfere with your call and provide incorrect data to our computer system. Therefore, you should turn off the call waiting feature before you phone to claim benefits. Also, using a cell phone is not recommended because interference or loss of signal may result in incorrect data being transmitted to our computer system.
Why certifying for benefits is important
When you certify for, or claim, your Unemployment Insurance benefits, you’re confirming to us that you met all the eligibility requirements for that week.
If you choose to certify by phone, you’ll do so every two weeks, as long as you’re out of work and eligible for benefits.
It is important to certify for, or claim, benefits every week you are unemployed, even if we notify you of a problem with your application. If the problem prevents benefits from being paid right away, or if you are denied benefits and are appealing that decision, you must still certify for benefits. - Your mailing address, county of residence

Changes To Support You During Covid
Temporary changes have been made to the Employment Insurance program to help you access EI regular benefits. The following changes are in effect until September 2021, and could apply to you:
