You Filed A Paper Tax Return

This year, the IRS is encouraging taxpayers to file electronically and set up direct deposit to get their refunds back more quickly. With mail delays, it could take a while for the IRS to receive your return in the mail and even longer to issue a paper check.

Filing your return online instead of through the mail is more important than ever this year to avoid refund delays, the IRS says. Instead of a paper tax return, use one of these free online tax filing services so you don’t have to wait to receive your money.

With no help in sight, people like Harris are turning to elected officials, lawyers, and even social media for help. Harris is part of the Unofficial California Unemployment Help Facebook group, which has drawn more than 56,000 members since it was started in March.

When asked via email what is causing the delays, the California EDD cited unprecedented demand for unemployment benefits. The EDD says it has processed 11.9 million combined claims for the regular unemployment insurance program, as well as the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.

Many states operate unemployment systems that are sorely out of date or didnt have the staff to handle this deluge of applications. The states are catching up, but if there is anything wrong with your application, you could get lost in the mix, says Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the progressive, independent think tank The Century Foundation.

If your application gets flagged and your states unemployment agency lacks the resources to resolve your issue, you could get stuck, says Stettner, who has over 20 years of experience as an unemployment insurance policy advocate.

This is what happened to Mikaelah Pagan, who found her way to the same Facebook group as Harris. She says she filed for unemployment with the EDD the day she lost her food service job and waited four months to receive benefits.

I Receive A 1099 For The Job I Do As An Independent Contractor Am I Eligible For Regular Ui

You may be eligible for regular unemployment insurance, as a 1099 employee is not synonymous with independent contractor as defined by the Unemployment Insurance Act.In Illinois, every individual who is unemployed or underemployed should file a claim for unemployment benefits, even if they have been told they’re not covered by the states regular unemployment insurance program – because theyre an independent contractor, part of the gig economy, or for some other reason. It is possible that whoever told them they were not covered was wrong. Even if an individuals employer does not consider the worker to be covered and doesnt pay unemployment taxes on the individuals wages, the individual can qualify for regular UI benefits if IDES determines he or she is covered under Illinois law. An employers failure to contribute to the unemployment system will not impact a claimants eligibility for benefits.

What Is A Benefit Year

Your benefit year is the 52-week time period that your unemployment claim is considered active before you need to reapply. This starts when you first filed and were approved for unemployment benefits, and last for 52 weeks from when you were eligible. This does not necessarily mean you will be eligible for benefits all 52 weeks, which depends on your individual situation.

Once your claim is filed, OESC must first determine if you are monetarily eligible for benefits. We may need to request wages from other states, complete investigations on missing wages, request federal agency or military wages, or adjust your claims base period to accurately determine monetary eligibility.

Once determined monetarily eligible, we will review your claim to determine if you are allowed benefits under the Oklahoma Employment Security Act. The U.S. Department of Labor has established that this eligibility determination should be issued within 21 days of a claim becoming monetarily eligible. After a determination is met, you will be mailed a letter detailing the decision and further information.

Work Search Requirements Causing Benefit Payment Issues

Over the last few months many claimants have reported that their UI benefits have stopped, particularly since the VEC reinstated work search requirements, which their antiquated systems have struggled to process . This is despite eligible claimants applying for jobs and reporting this on their weekly claims. The Benefit Year End Date , discussed in earlier updates below, does not seem to be the cause of the issue in most cases.

Governor Northam had asked claimants to be patient, despite Virginia being ranked among the worst states in paying claims, but this is not of much help to the many jobless workers who rely on federal and state unemployment benefits to pay for essentials and make ends meet.

Coupled with ongoing fraudulent claims many claimants have been caught in a web of automated call systems and process bureaucracy as their claims go unpaid. Getting hold of a live VEC agent has also been a challenge with many reporting hours of hold times and/or getting an untrained/new agent who is not able to help them

While the VEC, in a recent court hearing, said it had made significant progress in resolving thousands of unpaid and retroactive claims, it is estimated over 50,000 claims are still pending for review. Because a lot of these claims have to be checked manually so it could unfortunately take several months for eligible claimants to get paid which the VEC has to legally to so. I will post updates as I get them and check the comments forum below for more information.

What If I Cant Leave My Home Because I Must Care For My Child During The Pandemic Or Because I Have Covid

An individual in any of those situations would be unemployed through no fault of theirown and might be eligible for UI benefits. However, to qualify for UI, theywould still need to meet all other eligibility requirements. For example, the individual must be able and available for work, and show that they are seeking work from home. Individuals can be considered able and available to work if there is some work that they could perform from home .This individual also must prove that they left their job due to their employer. However, there is an exception to the requirement that the reason for leaving is due to the employer. That exception is when an individual quits a job because a licensed and practicing physician deems them unable to perform the work or when their employer is unable to accommodate the individuals need to care for a family member who has been verified to be in poor health or to have a disability.
