Begins Nov 7 For People Filing Unemployment For The First Time
WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. A big change is coming for people in Michigan filing for unemployment.
You will now be required to meet with Michigan Works! either in-person or virtually.
Heres how it works: after you make a claim with the states Michigan Unemployment Agency, you have to create a profile on Pure Michigan Talent Connect, then you have to meet with staff at Michigan Works! Association.
While it may be new to some, Greg Pitoniak who runs seven Michigan Works! job centers in Wayne and Monroe counties said this was a requirement before the pandemic.
That was a downside of of the suspension of a requirement during the pandemic, is that it did not create that automatic connection to the reemployment system that Michigan Works is, Pitoniak said.
The point of adding the requirement back in is to fill a gap we all see unfold with now hiring signs everywhere, including in front of the Michigan Works! job center in Wayne.
In a release announcing the requirement, the states UIA director Julia Dale said, it also provides unemployed workers with a great advantage in landing one of the 114,000 available jobs listed by employers on Pure Michigan Talent Connect.
When it comes to training for high demand jobs, Michigan Works! will cover the bill Pitoniak said.
Truck drivers is a great example. Its a very high demand occupation right now very many openings for truck drivers, and we can find training for most people for to get the CDL license, Pitoniak said.

To help Michiganders receive unemployment benefits as a result of COVID-19, the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency has developed a schedule for workers to file for benefits based on the first letter of their last name. If you have access to a computer and internet you should apply online. This will free up the phone lines for people who do not have a computer or who have questions.

As of Sunday, March 29th, Michigans Unemployment Insurance Agency has implemented a schedule for claimants to file according to their last names.
You can file your claim online at michigan.gov/uia, or by phone at 1-866-500-0017.
Online Filing Schedule
Those with last names that begin with A-L can file online on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Those with last names that begin with M-Z can file online on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. If you missed your day to file online, you can file on Saturday.

Duration Of Michigan Ui Benefits
An individual who qualifies for unemployment benefits in Michigan is assigned a “benefits year,” that runs for 52 weeks starting from the date of the claim. As long as they continue to qualify for UI benefits, they get weekly benefit checks. The size of the benefit amount depends on the worker’s recent wages.
Regular UI benefits in Michigan cannot exceed 26 weeks in the 52 week benefits year. But the state or federal government sometimes offers extended UI benefits to those who have exhausted their benefits.

How Much Money Will I Receive

How To Apply For Unemployment Benefits In Michigan Amid Coronavirus Crisis
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order extending unemployment insurance benefits to workers who are home caring for sick relatives or taking care of their children during the coronavirus pandemic. Also, anyone losing work as a result of the crisis is advised to apply.
Whitmers executive order extends unemployment benefits to workers who have an unanticipated family care responsibility, including child care responsibilities because of school closures. It also covers workers who are sick, quarantined or immunocompromised but do not have paid medical leave or are laid off, along with first responders who become ill or are quarantined because of the exposure to COVID-19.
Online applications are recommended because of increased call volumes in the past week, but those seeking to file a claim for benefits can also to apply.

Although circumstances may vary, individuals should expect their first payment about three weeks after they file their claim. Subsequent payments are released every two weeks after the individual certifies. The day or time of day in which a claim is filed will not impact whether a worker receives benefits or their benefit amount. Claims will be back-dated to reflect the date in which a claimant was laid-off or let go from their job due to COVID-19.

Fewer Americans Apply For Unemployment Benefits Last Week
WASHINGTON Fewer Americans applied for jobless aid last week with the number of Americans collecting unemployment at historically low levels.
Applications for unemployment benefits fell by 11,000 to 200,000 for the week ending May 28, the Labor Department reported Thursday. First-time applications generally track the number of layoffs.
The four-week average for claims, which evens out some of the weekly volatility, dipped by 500 from the previous week to 206,500.
The total number of Americans collecting jobless benefits for the week ending May 21 fell from the previous week, to 1,309,000, the fewest since Dec. 27, 1969.
American workers are enjoying historically strong job security two years after the coronavirus pandemic plunged the economy into a short but devastating recession. Weekly applications for unemployment aid have been consistently below the pre-pandemic level of 225,000 for most of 2022, even as the overall economy contracted in the first quarter and concerns over inflation persist.
Last month, the government reported Americas employers added 428,000 jobs in April, leaving the unemployment rate at 3.6%, just above the lowest level in a half-century. Hiring gains have been strikingly consistent in the face of the worst inflation in four decades, with employers adding at least 400,000 jobs for 12 straight months.

Michigan Unemployment Registration Process
Along with the claimants MI unemployment registration, he or she must register for work before becoming eligible for unemployment benefits, even if they registered for work immediately prior to filing that claim, and the registration has not expired.
To register, the UI petitioner must create a profile on Pure Michigan Talent Connect online. When a petitioner goes to file for an unemployment claim, he or she must also report in person to a Michigan Works! Agency service center, no later than three business days before contacting MARVIN or MiWAM to claim benefits. The applicant can create his or her profile online. MWA staff will validate the claimants profile for the UIA. Free access to the internet is available at any MWA service center. Failure to register for work can result in a delay or loss of benefits.
If the former employee is on a temporary lay-off from a full-time job, he or she does not have to register for work to be eligible for unemployment benefits. During the unemployment EDD application process, the former worker is asked a question about returning to work and the date. If the answer was that they have a return-to-work date with the same employer within 120 days from the last day of full-time work, he or she does not have to register for workalthough the petitioner still must submit the Monthly Work Search report through MiWAM or mail.
