How Pua Benefits Are Calculated

GRANTS FREE MONEY & LOANS | Unemployment Update | Daily News Stock Market | PUA EDD SSI UPDATE

The PUA program provides up to 39 weeks of unemployment benefits. These benefits are retroactive for weeks of unemployment beginning on or after January 27, 2020 and ending on December 31, 2020. Benefits are calculated based on 2019 wages. Claimants can provide documentation of these wages, including tax filings and 1099s. The 2019 wages are then applied to the states normal unemployment insurance calculation.

In many cases, states made a minimum weekly PUA payment rather than calculating benefits based on 2019 wages. That minimum payment amounted to 50% of the average weekly payment of regular compensation in the state, as provided quarterly by the Department, according to the Department of Labor. Its this minimum PUA benefit that is central to the GAO findings.

Plan Ahead By Starting An Emergency Fund

A solid emergency fund can serve as a lifeboat in a financial storm, keeping you and your family afloat during the worst of a crisis like unemployment.

But according to the Federal Reserves Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2018, many Americans are not financially prepared for emergencies, including unemployment. In fact, over one-quarter of Americans surveyed said they could not cover an unexpected $400 expense without having to borrow money or sell something, while 12% of those surveyed said they couldnt cover an unexpected $400 expense at all.

Building an emergency fund can help you navigate a financial crisis and sometimes even come out with a better budget than before. In addition to cutting your expenses and searching for side gigs, here are a few steps you can take to start building an emergency fund:

  • Shop around for better rates on your credit cards, car insurance, homeowners or renters insurance and phone and cable plans.
  • Consider refinancing your auto loan or mortgage.
  • Clear out your used, unwanted items and sell them in a yard sale or online.
  • Cancel your subscriptions and other recurring payments for anything you dont need or regularly use. Save the difference.
  • Treat any unexpected income, such as birthday gifts, commissions, or tax refunds, as automatic savings.

How much money should people have in an emergency fund in case of unemployment or another financial crisis?

Alex Kilian:

The difference in liquidity between unemployed individuals varies greatly. This further proves the importance of having around six months of cash saved on the side for a rainy day.

What is the essential thing for unemployed people to avoid to grip their financial health intact until they find full-time work?

Alex Kilian:

In most cases, you should leave your retirement account alone. This is long-term money. Id much rather use credit cards to live than raiding my retirement fund. Furthermore, your retirement accounts are protected if you were in a bad spot and had to file for bankruptcy.

What should unemployed people know about opening up additional lines of credit?

Alex Kilian:

I encourage those that can to open a line of credit on their homes if they have the equity to do so. It doesnt mean you need to borrow, but its better to tap into a home equity loan than to run out of money or spend down cash when debt is so cheap .

As of now, there’s no federal guidance on eligibility pertaining to people concerned about transmitting the virus to a high-risk family member. However, in some states, people who would be able to work but are providing care for a high-risk person will have a good cause for not returning to work and may be able to collect unemployment benefits, he says.

Millions of Americans have now been cut off from federal pandemic-era jobless benefits, ending what experts described as the most generous expansion to unemployment insurance in U.S. history.

Jobless Americans had been receiving extra money in their weekly unemployment insurance checks since March 2020, following the signing of the massive CARES Act into law by then-President Donald Trump as the coronavirus pandemic first cratered the U.S. labor market. Typically ineligible gig workers and freelancers were also able to take advantage of jobless benefits thanks to pandemic-era, federal-funded joblessness programs.

But those programs have now expired, with President Joe Bidens $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan writing in a Sept. 6 sunset date for both outbreak-induced programs. That comes as 26 states already moved on their own to curb enhanced unemployment benefits ahead of that deadline.

The U.S. economy has rapidly improved since last years pandemic-related fall out, with experts expecting the fastest rate of growth in four decades. Even as job openings surge to new records and firms echo concerns of labor shortages, the job market still has 5.7 million fewer jobs than before the outbreak. Virus and childcare concerns are keeping workers on the sidelines and the areas where jobs were lost arent exactly where theyre returning.

Heres nine steps you can take with your finances if youre still unemployed.

Ways To Earn Money When Youre Unemployed

Depending on your skillset and the schedule youre able to work, there are various options for earning money. Even though some industries are in decline or in a state of flux, others are gaining jobs.

The gig economy continues to grow. In its Freelance Forward: 2020 study, remote work site Upwork found that 59 million people in the U.S. worked as freelancers over the past year. According to the study, this represents 36% of the U.S. workforce, or 2 million freelancers, since 2019.

Here are some ways you can quickly start generating income to help you get by.

I Was Furloughed By My Employer But They Have Now Reopened And Asked Me To Return To My Job Can I Remain On Unemployment

No. As a general matter, individuals receiving regular unemployment compensation must act upon any referral to suitable employment and must accept any offer of suitable employment. Barring unusual circumstances, a request that a furloughed employee return to his or her job very likely constitutes an offer of suitable employment that the employee must accept.

While eligibility for PUA does not turn on whether an individual is actively seeking work, it does require that the individual be unemployed, partially employed, or unable or unavailable to work due to certain circumstances that are a direct result of COVID-19 or the COVID-19 public health emergency. In the situation outlined here, an employee who had been furloughed because his or her employer has closed the place of employment would potentially be eligible for PUA while the employer remained closed, assuming the closure was a direct result of the COVID-19 public health emergency and other qualifying conditions are satisfied. However, as soon as the business reopens and the employee is recalled for work, as in the example above, eligibility for PUA would cease unless the individual could identify some other qualifying circumstance outlined in the CARES Act.

Two ways to make money if you can’t file for unemployment

Unemployment, Medicaid, Food Stamps, WIC, and other programs are a safety net designed to help you get through this period. Other countries have many programs as well. Although the paperwork and bureaucracy can be daunting, it is worth getting as many of the benefits that you are entitled to as possible. Remember, every little bit can help you close the gap and mitigate the damage.

If you have moralistic views about not taking handouts, you can write down every penny you got from every program and commit to paying it back when you can. These programs were created to help people, and in a practical sense, taking money or aid from these programs will not take money from someone elses pocket.

Consider Temporary Work Or Freelancing

Don’t like that resume gap? Make it disappear by adding temporary projects or becoming a freelancer to your work record. It’s a great way to make money while unemployed, which can go a long way toward making you feel better.

When looking at temporary opportunities while unemployed, choose something that makes good use of your existing professional skills. You will find yourself more in demand, as hiring managers want to minimize the learning curve on short-term assignments. The projects that are a good fit for your skill set will also make logical sense on your career timeline.

Freelancing has been made easier by online platforms that serve as marketplaces for project-based work. There are many benefits to freelancing, including flexibility, a chance to choose the projects that get you excited, and an opportunity to shape your personal brand. Because the projects usually start out small, you can enjoy a boost of dopamine from the easy gigs you score which helps you keep up your motivation when the progress on your main job search is stalling.

Transcribe Audio And Video

Transcriptionists convert audio and video recordings into written documentation. If you are very detail-oriented, this may be a gig for you. There are usually typing tests and recommended typing speeds, but there is always room to increase your speed with consistent practice.

The average pay for a transcriptionist is about $17 per hour, according to Indeed.com.
