    Can I Work Part Time And Collect Unemployment Ny

    Partial benefits are available to individuals who work fewer than 4 days per week and earn less than $504 during that week. Each day or partial day that you work causes your unemployment benefits rate to drop by 25%. For example, if you work three days of the week and earn $400, your benefit rate will drop to $100. If you work only two days of the week, your benefits will drop to $200. If you work one day of the week, your benefits will be only $300.

    Receiving partial benefits extends the amount of time that you can collect unemployment. However, if you receive more than $504 per week , you canât receive unemployment benefits for that week.

    When you file your unemployment claim, youâll be asked to enter the date of the last day that you worked. This should be the last day that you were physically present at your job, whether it was full-time or part-time work. If your more recent employer employed you for only part-time work, enter this employerâs information as the âlastâ or âmost recent employerâ when you fill out your claim. If you plan to continue working part-time for this employer, you will enter âlack of workâ as the reason why you wish to collect unemployment.

    Expiration Of Federal Unemployment And Pandemic Benefits

    As of September 5, 2021, several federal unemployment benefit programs have expired across the country, per federal law. The federal benefit programs that have expired include:

    • Pandemic Unemployment Assistance
    • Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation
    • Extended Benefits
    • $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation
    • $100 Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation

    Unemployment Insurance benefits will continue to be paid to eligible claimants. To be considered eligible for UI after September 5, 2021, a claimant must be unemployed AND be in the first 26 weeks of benefits. Claimants can find their effective days remaining in their online Payment History. Because FPUC has expired, any weeks a claimant is eligible to receive UI benefits after September 5, 2021 will no longer include the additional $300 in FPUC.

If that’s happened to you, you should file for unemployment benefits right away — even if your layoff is temporary and you expect to start working again once the business that employs you reopens. Here’s what you need to know about applying for unemployment in New York State.

    How Can I Apply

    The best way to file a new unemployment insurance claim in New York is through the state department of labors online portal. The day of the week to apply is based on the first letter of your last name, and youll need a NY.gov ID to sign into the portal. If you dont already have a NY.gov account, you can create one through the department of labors online services page. But if you already applied for unemployment by phone, youll need to wait at least one business day before creating an online account.

    You can also call the claim center at 1-888-209-8124 during the agencys COVID-19 expanded hours of 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday Eastern time.

    Whether you apply online or by phone, youll need to provide some basic information, which includes

    • Social Security number
    • Drivers license or motor vehicle ID card number
    • Mailing address with ZIP code
    • Alien registration card number if not a U.S. citizen
    • Names and addresses of all employers for the last 18 months
    • Your most recent employers employer registration number or federal employer identification number, or FEIN
    • Copies of forms SF8 and SF50 if you were a federal employee
    • Most recent Form DD 214 for separation if you were in the military

    Take note that filing without all of this information could delay your first payment.

    Expanded Unemployment In New York During The Covid

    Filing for unemployment in New York

    On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed into law a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill known as the American Rescue Plan .

    Under ARP, the $300 per week federal unemployment supplement is extended until September 6, 2021.

    The law also extends two unemployment programs originally created by the CARES Act in March 2020: Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation .

    Under the PUA program, self-employed workersusually excluded from unemployment benefitsare entitled to unemployment if they meet certain criteria. ARP makes PUA benefits available through Labor Day 2021, and increases the maximum duration of these benefits from 50 to 79 weeks.

    The PEUC program provides for a federally-funded extension of benefits when state unemployment benefits expire. ARP increases the maximum duration of PEUC benefits from 24 to 53 weeks, with an expiry date of September 4, 2021.

    How To File A Partial Claim

    If you lost work and you are working part time 30 hours or fewer a week and making $504 or less per week, the following guidelines apply when reporting your part-time work , effective August 16, 2021 and forward:

    • 10 or fewer hours of work = 0 days worked: No reduction in weekly benefit rate
    • 11 16 hours of work = 1 day worked: 75% of weekly benefit rate
    • 17 21 hours of work = 2 days worked: 50% of weekly benefit rate
    • 22 30 hours of work = 3 days worked: 25% of weekly benefit rate
    • 31+ hours of work = 4 days worked: 0% of weekly benefit rate

    Please note: If you are certifying for benefit weeks prior to August 16, 2021, you must use the prior guidelines, which can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions below.

    You are covered under the states Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. You can qualify if you were diagnosed with COVID-19, have COVID-19 symptoms and are seeking treatment, or you are providing care for a family or household member diagnosed with COVID-19.

    You qualify if you are the primary caregiver of a child unable to attend school or became a familys major breadwinner because the head of household died from COVID-19.

    You qualify if you are self-employed, a 1099 filer, or independent contractor that was affected by COVID-19.
