Media Contact: , 313-348-8220
As Michigan’s economy continues to improve, the Unemployment Insurance Agency will reinstate work search requirements for unemployment benefit claimants starting May 30, 2021. The work search requirement was suspended in March 2020 to help the increased volume of hardworking Michiganders facing unemployment due to the pandemic.

- Submitting a job application.
- Attending a job fair or employment workshop
- Applying for the new Clean Slate program
- Participating in reemployment services through Michigan Works! or creating an account on job search sites such as MiTalent.org.
Work search is required for those receiving benefits under the state’s regular unemployment insurance program as well as federal benefit programs. If an individual has an approved waiver, they are exempt from the work search requirement. There are COVID- specific exemptions for people who are self-employed, unable to work due to COVID-19, and parents with children attending school remotely because the school is closed.
Claimants may apply for a waiver prior to their certification either in MiWAM or by calling the UIA customer service line at 866-500-0017. They will be notified at the time of the request whether a waiver of the requirement is granted.

Inquire At Staffing Agencies
Signing up with a staffing or recruitment agency may be worth considering if you want to find jobs more effectively. Most towns have several staffing agencies that you can register with. Some are industry-specific and others deal with many different industries. You will likely need to provide a resume as well as copies of your certifications and qualifications, and you may need to sit for tests such as typing speed or knowledge of specific industries.
Some agencies may only deal with short-term and temporary contracts at first. This may not be exactly what you were hoping for but if you gain temporary employment with a company and impress them with your work, it could lead to a permanent job. It also gives you the chance to meet people who work in your industry, which can lead to other networking or referral opportunities.
A short-term contract can also provide you with further experience to find out if you are actually suited to the role. This is useful if you are not entirely certain what sort of job you want to do.
An agency has a reputation to uphold, so if you reflect well on them, then you will have a positive experience that could lead to increasingly better opportunities.

What To Do When Unemployed
In almost every state, you are required to actively search for new work opportunities while on unemployment. This means that while you are receiving benefits, you should be searching and applying for new jobs as outlined by your states unemployment benefits agency.

How To Submit My Weekly Job Search Log For Unemployment
Participation in any state unemployment benefit program requires you to perform an active job search and keep a written job search log. How often you must search and the types of jobs you must apply for depends on the laws of the state. For each benefits week you must certify that youve completed the search requirements. However, thats just a statement saying you looked for a job. If the state performs a random audit of your claim or has reason to investigate your claim, it asks you to submit your job search log for verification.
Read the request for your job search log carefully to understand what dates the state wants the search records for.
Review your job search records for clarity and the appropriate information. Transfer the information to the states official job search information if you didnt keep the records on it in the first place. Use pen and legible handwriting.
Send the job search log by fax or mail to the address or fax number on the notice within the time window indicated.
Many states have a form they prefer you use, which you can find in your unemployment handbook or on the states labor offices website. If the state doesnt have a dedicated form, you can just write down the name of the person you interacted with, the position you applied for, the date and the contact information. If you file an application over the Internet, indicate the company, the website and the date.

Unemployment Available For Work Requirements
Depending on state regulations, workers who are unemployed must be available for suitable work and actively seeking suitable employment. At the minimum, this includes being ready to accept work immediately if a job is offered to you. You must also be willing to accept employment for all shifts and days that are normal for your occupation.
You must accept the wage most employers in your area pay for your occupation for someone with your qualifications and experience, and you must be willing to commute a reasonable distance to work. The travel to work requirement considered reasonable could be as much as an hour to an hour and a half each way.
The requirements vary based on how long you have been unemployed, and if you are collecting extended benefits. In some cases, you may be required to accept any work you are capable of performing, not just a similar job in the field you were laid off from.
