Check With Your State Tax Department Or Unemployment Office

State tax departments and unemployment agencies can often release employment histories for individuals, as long as they worked for in-state employers. In Washington State, for example, it’s called a “Self-Request for Records,” and you can request as far back as 10 years. In New York, you can request a transcript of your New York State wages and tax withholding. Most states have similar resources available.

How Long Is It Taking For Payments To Be Issued

In most cases, once you have successfully completed the initial claim process, you must certify for benefits each week thereafter in order to be paid . If, based on your answers to the certification questions, you are eligible for benefits that week, typically you should receive your benefits on the Tuesday or Wednesday of that week. Due to the volume of claims currently going through the unemployment system, in limited circumstances, some payments for successfully certified claims may not arrive until Thursday.

First payments may take a little longer. If you have selected direct deposit as your method of payment, you may not receive your first payment until after 9 days from the date of requesting this payment method.

Note: When the payment method is labeled as “PreNote Stage,” this is the time for the banks to authenticate the direct deposit information. If you have selected debit card, you should receive the debit card in the mail in approximately 10 days. Once you receive and activate your debit card, you will have access to your first payment.

If there is an ‘issue’ on your claim that is preventing payment, OESC must investigate the issue and determine whether you are eligible to receive benefits. You Accidentally Answered A Question Incorrectly

According to reporting by ABC7 News in San Francisco, a confusingly worded question that many people answered incorrectly caused their California unemployment payments to get stuck on pending for weeks. The question asked people who were recertifying their qualification for benefits if there was any reason besides sickness or injury that they couldnt work.

Many people answered yes, because the pandemic was the reason they were out of work, but the system was set up assuming that people would answer no even if the pandemic was causing their unemployment. Their applications then got categorized as requiring an interview with an unemployment department representative, creating delays that can take weeks to resolve.

    Checking Status Of Alabama Unemployment

The new online tool to track the status of Alabama unemployment claims went live in mid-April 2020. Dubbed the Alabama UI Claim Tracker, with UI standing for “unemployment insurance,” claimants can also use this tool to find out the amount of their weekly benefits, know when their next payment should be received and process their claims further, if necessary.

The ADOL has been inundated with phone calls and a record number of claims because of COVID-19, which is why it implemented the UI Claim Tracker. The agency’s goal is to help workers find information about their unemployment claims faster by using this online tool instead of being unable to reach someone by phone.

    Receive Your Benefit Payments

It takes at least three weeks to process a claim for unemployment benefits and issue payment to most eligible workers.

When your first benefit payment is available, you will receive a debit card in the mail. Once you activate the card you can track, use, and transfer your benefit payments. Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs, so you should keep it until it expires.

If you received Unemployment Insurance, Disability Insurance, or Paid Family Leave benefits on a debit card in the last three years, you will receive your benefit payments on that card. If your card has expired, a new card will automatically be sent to you once funds are available.

Note: If you were issued a debit card before 2015, you must request a new one. Visit Bank of Americas website or contact Bank of America at 1-866-692-9374 .

If you lost your debit card, contact Bank of America as early as possible in the application process to request a replacement card before your first payment. Your new card will arrive 7 to 10 business days from the order date. You have a couple options to request a new card:

    • Visit the Bank of America website.
    • Contact Bank of America at 1-866-692-9374 . You do not need to have your old card number or speak to a representative. Choose the Lost or Stolen option in the automated menu. The call center is experiencing higher than normal wait times and Bank of America is working to address the issue.

In December the US saw its first jobs loss since the start of the recovery with 140,000 new unemployment claims. In April over 20 million people lost their jobs at the onset of the coronavirus induced economic crisis that US has yet to fully recover from . The current unemployment rate held steady at 6.7 percent but is still nearly double the historic low in February 2020 of 3.5 percent.

Fortunately Congress was able to reach a compromise to keep unemployment benefits going into the early months of the incoming Biden administration. A $900 billion bipartisan covid-19 relief package will extend payments for 11 weeks until mid-March giving Americans an additional $300 per week on top of their state benefits. Mixed-income earners in most states will get an extra $100 per week on top of the $300. States are already rolling out the new payments but not all are up and running.

    What Is A Benefit Year

Your benefit year is the 52-week time period that your unemployment claim is considered active before you need to reapply. This starts when you first filed and were approved for unemployment benefits, and last for 52 weeks from when you were eligible. This does not necessarily mean you will be eligible for benefits all 52 weeks, which depends on your individual situation.
