After Youre Approved For Benefits
When your claim is processed and you have obtained Colorado unemployment benefits eligibility, you will need to go through a waiting week, which means youll have an unpaid week without benefits. However, Colorado is temporarily waiving the waiting week due to COVID-19.
Next, youll need to certify for benefits every two weeks you wish to claim unemployment. These biweekly certifications can be done through your MyUI account or over the phone. Your first request for payment will be on the Sunday immediately following the first two weeks of your claim.
If you file a claim Sunday through Wednesday, your claim will be effective the week you file. If you file a claim on Thursday through Saturday, your claim will be effective the following week.
In addition to submitting your claims, you must register with a local workforce center within four weeks of your initial claim. To register, go to www.connectingcolorado.com or visit any one of the 50 workforce centers located throughout Colorado. If you have difficulty registering, or have questions about Colorado unemployment, contact a CDLE office to ensure you do not miss benefits.

Requirements For Qualifying For Unemployment
Eligibility requirements to qualify for unemployment compensation vary from state to state. However, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are two main criteria that must be met in order to qualify:
1. You must be unemployed through no fault of your own. In this case, a persons unemployment must be caused by an external factor beyond his or her control, such as a layoff or a furlough. Quitting your job with a good reason or being fired for misconduct in the workplace will most likely render you ineligible for unemployment benefits.
2. You must meet your states requirements for time worked or wages earned during a set period of time. This marker can be confusing, but its safe to assume that if you had a long-term job that you lost unexpectedly or without just cause, you would meet your states requirements.
Getting Denied For Benefits
If Illinois finds you not eligible for unemployment benefits, you have 30 days to take action and appeal to the state. This involves filling out a form that asks you to describe in detail why Illinois should reconsider your application. You’ll need to fax or mail your packet since the IDES offices are currently closed.
The state will determine whether to deny the appeal or set up an appeal hearing where you’ll submit your evidence and speak on the phone to defend your claim. Continue certifying regularly while you complete this process.

Always Keep Written Records For Job Actions
Throughout the time that you receive unemployment benefits, its vital that you keep detailed records of what youre doing to get yourself a new job. This is vital because you may be called in for an interview where you will be asked for this information.
On occasion, people are called in for interviews to talk about their unemployment. During these interviews, youll be asked to show off your records and prove how you are looking for a new job. If you cant prove that youve been doing what youre supposed to to find a new job you could lose your benefits and even be held liable to pay your past benefits back.
As long as you write down who you call, what applications you submit and everything else that you do, and youre trying for at least three jobs a week, you shouldnt have an issue with the program.
