How To Work And Receive Unemployment Benefits In South Carolina
If you claim unemployment benefits in South Carolina you are allowed to work part-time. The state even encourages working and receiving benefits at the same time, but all recipients are obligated to report their gross earnings each week, even if they have not been paid yet. Your federal unemployment benefits will not be reduced if you earn 25 percent or less of your weekly benefit amount. Failing to report your earnings can result in the department charging you with unemployment insurance fraud. If you are charged with fraud, you will be barred from receiving benefits for up to one year, and in severe cases, individuals can face jail time and fines. You must econtinue to file weekly either online using your MyBenefits portal or by telephone. You must actively seek appropriate, full-time work. You must regularly report to your local Workforce Center. Also, you must make four employer contacts each week, keep a record of these contacts, and two of these contacts must be through SC Works Online Services.

How To Stop Claiming Unemployment Benefits In South Carolina
You must stop receiving federal unemployment benefits in South Carolina once you accept an offer for suitable work. To stop claiming unemployment benefits, simply stop filing claims and accept your new job. If you have not found employment, you may file for benefits until you reach your maximum benefit amount. Below is some important information about your maximum benefit amount:

How To Appeal A Denial Of Unemployment Benefits In South Carolina
If your claim for unemployment is denied, you have ten days to file a Request for Reconsideration with the Appeal Tribunal. Your request for appeal must be in writing and mailed or faxed to the DEW’s Appeals Division.
After receiving your appeal request, the Appeal Tribunal will schedule a hearing, either by telephone or in person. An administrative hearing officer will conduct the hearing and receive evidence from both you and your employer. After considering the evidence, the hearing officer will issue a written decision. If you disagree with the hearing officer’s decision, you may appeal to the Appellate Panel within ten days. And, if you disagree with the Appellate Panel’s decision, you may file an appeal with the South Carolina Administrative Law Court within 30 days.

What It Is: $100 weekly add-on benefit for those who are eligible for regular UI benefits, but also earned self-employment income.

How It Is Changing: Beginning June 27, 2021, MEUC will no longer be available in South Carolina. Any claims for benefits for weeks of unemployment filed prior to June 27, 2021 will include MEUC benefits if an individual is eligible.
Beginning June 27, unemployment benefits in South Carolina will return to pre-pandemic policies. Individuals are eligible for state Unemployment Insurance if they:
- Are unemployed through no fault of their own.
- Have served their one-week waiting period after filing an initial claim.
- Are monetarily eligible, or have enough wages from past employers to qualify.
- Are able to work.

What If My Job Wants Me Back With Reduced Hours Can I Still Collect Unemployment
If you are working reduced hours because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the wages you earn will affect the amount of unemployment benefits you are entitled to receive. If you earn $420 per week or more then you will not be able to receive a benefit. Each claimant has a Weekly Earning Allowance, 20% of their benefit amount. That is the amount that a claimant can make before their benefit is impacted.
Expanded Unemployment In South Carolina During The Covid
On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed into law a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill known as the American Rescue Plan . The law extended a $300 per week federal unemployment supplement until September 6, 2021. However, in response to apparent labor shortages, the state of South Carolina decided to end this supplement early on June 26, 2021. That means the unemployment supplement is no longer available in South Carolina.
The law also extended two unemployment programs originally created by the CARES Act in March 2020: Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation .
Under the PUA program, self-employed workersusually excluded from unemployment benefitsare entitled to unemployment if they meet certain criteria. ARP makes PUA benefits available through Labor Day 2021, and increases the maximum duration of these benefits from 50 to 79 weeks.
The PEUC program provides for a federally-funded extension of benefits when state unemployment benefits expire. ARP increases the maximum duration of PEUC benefits from 24 to 53 weeks, with an expiry date of September 4, 2021.

South Carolina Unemployment Weekly Claims
File your weekly claim to prove you remain eligible for benefits and qualify to get a weekly payment. If you have not heard back from DEW on the status of your initial claim, still file weekly claim so that if you qualify, you will receive back payments. File your weekly claim in one of three ways:
1. Online via the MyBenefits portal After logging in, answer the questions about whether you worked, earned any gross pay and whether you were able, available and looking for work.
2. In person at an SC Works center near you.
3. Calling TelClaim System.
SC residents can call 1.866.831.1724 from 4:00 a.m. until midnight. Non-residents can call 1.866. 831. 1725. Both lines are toll free, and services are provided free to claimants. You can call to check the status of your payment only Tuesdays through Saturdays.
Filing weekly claims by phone requires:

- Your Personal Identification Number

Federal Pandemic Unemployment Benefits Ending In South Carolina Businesses Still Looking To Hire Workers
GREENVILLE, SC – This week is the final week people in South Carolina will be eligible to receive federal pandemic unemployment benefits.
It comes after Gov. McMaster announced he was opting the state out of the program back in May, at the time he said his decision was made to help get people back into the workforce.
At Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn in downtown Greenville, it’s one of many small businesses looking to hire.
At its peak, the business had five employees.
It’s now down to 2.
The locally-owned shop says navigating through the pandemic has changed how they view hiring.
“We’re looking for people who can have flexibility, who are more creative, who are open minded, who are willing to go the extra mile because that’s what a small business needs to survive,” explained Owner Rose Augustyn.
She says their small business has a hard time competing with other businesses that can offer more benefits.
As more people look for jobs coming out of the pandemic, we found from the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce that there are over 80,000 jobs currently posted.
The state’s unemployment rate in May was at 4.6%.
For those in the state still relying on unemployment insurance, those are changing starting June 27.
For those who have been on unemployment, state officials say to still certify your claim between June 27-July 3 to receive the last week of federal unemployment benefits.
