Isan Divide Over Impact Of Unemployment Benefits

In support of the legislation, Republican lawmakers cite hardship for businesses trying to hire workers to the extended benefits.

“You go around any county in the state right now, and you see ‘help wanted’ signs everywhere,” said Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville. “They are looking for warm bodies. They are looking for people who can pass the drug test and just show up to work.”

Vaughan echoed Bell’s argument.

“We’ve seen more supplemental federal dollars pouring into the system,” he said Tuesday. “It’s also becoming … a workforce supply chain issue. We have people that are not being able to find laborers.”

Vaughan added Tuesday lawmakers intend to hold an “unemployment workshop” in the summer to discuss further changes to the unemployment system.

Rep. Jason Zachary, R-Knoxville, referred to the number of job openings in Tennessee to argue the extended benefits have discouraged people from seeking work. As of Wednesday, more than 255,000 jobs are available, state data shows.

“We are not Washington. We cannot print money,” he said. “We have to ensure the solvency of these programs, to ensure those that fall on hard times are able to gain access to unemployment .”

But Democratic lawmakers opposed the measure, arguing the overall reduction in unemployment benefits would fail to meet Tennesseans’ soaring needs during a pandemic.

“I think about what I could spend $25 on,” he said. “Not much of anything.”

Clemmons called his Republican colleagues’ position a “false narrative.”

Understanding Extended Benefits In Tennessee

Unemployment benefit extensions in Tennessee are not currently available, but can be made available by the senate in cases of particularly high unemployment rates across the country. Once unemployment has reached the peak required percentage, an unemployment compensation extension will typically be made available for those who need it. One of the mot traditionally granted federal unemployment extension is known as Extended Benefits, or EB.

When Extended Benefits are available, they are only given to unemployment recipients who have already exhausted their original unemployment benefits, and are in need of an unemployment benefits extension. If an applicant is eligible to receive an unemployment compensation extension, he or she can potentially receive an extra 50 percent of the regular benefit entitlement.

Can I Get Unemployment Compensation

In Tennessee you are generally going to be able to draw unemployment compensation unless you are unable to work, voluntarily quit or did something to cause yourself to get fired. These are what are known as disqualifying events. The statute setting these out can be found here.

The first disqualifying event is self-explanatory. If you have some medical condition that caused you to lose your job, you may be required to provide a medical certification that you are now able to work. If you are not able to work, you are not able to draw unemployment compensation.

The second disqualifying event is also pretty self-explanatory, but sometimes does cause people some confusion. It is not the case that if you quit for any reason you are disqualified from receiving unemployment compensation. Rather, the standard in the law is that you “voluntarily quit without good cause connected with the work.” What this means is that if your employer did something that caused you to quit , then you can still draw your unemployment compensation. If you quit because you didn’t like the work or the employer was doing something that the employer had a legal right to do, then you are disqualified.

Tennessee Unemployment Hits Record Low â Thunder Radio

Since the pandemic started, the state has received nearly 1 million claims for unemployment, he said. Thats about more than a decade worth of unemployment in the last seven and a half months.

Its taking a lot longer to process the 10,000 new claims the state gets every week, instead of the normal three-week turnaround.

Cannon said in some cases it can take a month or two to process a claim. He said if there are problems with the claim, like missing information or documentation, that can make it even longer.

But the state is clearing many claims and paying tens of thousands each week, even bringing on more staff.

As soon as this hit, we ramped up as quickly as we could and we added nearly 500 people to work on unemployment since the beginning of the pandemic, Cannon said.

But the demand has not let up, so we wanted to know what they suggest people do to make sure their claims dont get bogged down. According to Cannon:

  • When you are applying online, make sure you are paying very close attention to each and every question. Dont leave out any details and make sure you are getting all information correct.
  • Make sure you are not creating any red flags for your claim. That will delay your process and delay your payments.
  • You can track your claim through their system.
  • If you have to call, avoid Monday or Tuesday mornings.

If you get unemployment benefits through the CARES Act, those programs end Dec. 26. Right now there is no word if it will be extended by Congress.
