  • How many weeks? A total of 57 weeks through March 14, 2021. This program includes whats called a phase-out period, meaning If you dont use your 57 weeks by March 14, 2021, you can now continue receiving benefits until you have used all 57 weeks or reach the week ending April 11, 2021, whichever comes first.
  • Note: If you apply after Jan. 31, 2021, you will need to provide self-employment documentation within 21 days of submitting your application.

Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation

  • Who is this for? This is only available for people who have exhausted their 26 weeks of traditional Unemployment Insurance .
  • How many weeks? A total of 24 weeks through March 14, 2021. Again, you will be able to receive benefits until you have used all 24 weeks or reach the week ending April 11, 2021, whichever comes first.

These benefits kick in automatically after these other weeks have been exhausted.
  • How many weeks? 20 weeks of additional benefits.

Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation

Am I Eligible For The Extended Federal Benefits

The general rule is that anyone who lost their job or was furloughed for reasons related to the pandemic is now able to collect weekly unemployment benefits under the CARES Act. So, if you currently qualify for unemployment benefits, you are automatically eligible for the extended benefits under the stimulus package.

When Will The $600 Federal Unemployment Check Be Paid

… I got my first unemployment check but not the $600.

The pipeline for these payments is still unclear.

… Ive been unemployed since January 2020. Is the $600 weekly benefit retroactive from then or just from the date it was announced?

Depending on when your state entered into an agreement with the federal government, the $600 weekly benefit could be retroactive back to March 28. It ends July 31.

… Are furloughs eligible for the federal $600?

Yes. If the person isn’t being paid, they are considered unemployed and can receive that federal assistance.

Unemployment Benefits Debate Continues

The $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief law, known as the CARES Act, enhanced jobless pay for these individuals. However, the extra cash, currently $600 a week, will end after July 31. Some states are ending it a week earlier, on July 25. That $600 is a lot higher than the $378 a week in state unemployment benefits prior to the relief law, according to the Labor Department. The law boosts that weekly total to $978 a week a 159% increase.

Normally, the state would replace about 40% of an unemployed person’s wage but the extra benefit topped up their income to help during the pandemic. Michele Evermore, senior policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project, says 31 July was an arbitrary date picked and does not reflect anything on the horizon reflecting a recovery.

In late March, we all thought this was going to pass in a few months, says Evermore. “Now, I really dont think were going to be back to business as usual for a quite while.

Some states have offered unemplyed people an extra 13 weeks of benefits and others have offered 26 as part of the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program for workers who have exhausted their state benefits. Montana, for example, are offering unemployed citizens 41 weeks of unemployment.

Ending the extra $600 on August 1 would wreak havoc in the economy, says Evermore.

  • Write on the check/money order made payable to U.S. Treasury and write 2020EIP, and the taxpayer identification number of the recipient of the check.

Some states offer fewer weeks of benefits than others. But with unemployment now expanded, anyone who is still out of work when their state benefit period runs out will be able to get payments for an additional 13 weeks from the federal government.

Those who worked in states like Florida where the initial period is only 12 weeks, would be eligible for the unemployment insurance specifically pegged to the pandemic which tacks on another 14 weeks.

Through these various steps, all those who are out of work will be able to get assistance for up to 39 weeks.

How To Calculate Your Payment Amount

You may earn up to 25% of your Weekly Benefit Amount before we reduce your benefits for that week. If you earn more, then we will reduce your benefit payment by the amount that is over 25%. If you earn more than your weekly benefit amount plus 25%, we cannot pay you benefits for that week.

To calculate the amount of benefits you may receive, multiply your weekly benefit amount by 1.25 and then subtract your gross earnings. Your Statement of Benefits lists your weekly benefit amount.

For example, if your weekly benefit amount is $400, you may earn up to $100 without a reduction in your benefits. If you earn more than $100, we subtract your earnings from $500 and pay you the difference. Either way, your benefits plus your earnings would total up to $500 for the week. If you earn more than $500 , we cannot pay you benefits for that week.

Can I Apply For Unemployment Benefits For A Second Part

Losing a second job makes you eligible for partial unemployment insurance. States have different rules regarding part-time positions, but the federal CARES Act does say part-time workers who are affected by the ramifications of COVID-19 can get assistance. Check with your state, but you should be able to get some aid.

… I work 2 part time jobs, one of which I had my hours cut way back. I am still working about 20 hours a week in one job. Can I collect unemployment insurance on a part time job?

It depends on the state whether part-time workers can receive unemployment benefits. California for instance does pay out such funds. The federal CARES Act also says part-time workers are entitled to assistance if their hours are cut for reasons out of their control. So you may be able to get the $600 federal benefit as well, but again, it’s best to check with your state unemployment office

I Applied For Unemployment Benefits But Got Denied Because I Dont Make Enough What Can I Do

Can You Still Get Unemployment Benefits If Your Hours Are Reduced?

You might be eligible for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance . Anyone who has been turned down for traditional unemployment benefits for making too little is supposed to be automatically assessed by the Department of Labor to see if theyre eligible for PUA, according to Salk.

Salk said: Im not sure theyre always doing that. Sometimes things get lost in translation. Its very bureaucratic.

So heres what you should do: Once you get a denial, you have only 30 days to request a hearing with the Department of Labor. Before COVID, claimants could receive a hearing within three to four weeks. But due to the high volume of requests, Salk says its been much longer lately.

Salks advice: If you get denied, request a hearing. While youre waiting for that hearing, reach out to an organization that can provide you with some assistance. Here are a few you could contact:

What If I Am Denied Benefits How Can I Appeal A Denial Of My Claim

You could be denied benefits for a variety of reasons, including not completing paperwork in a timely manner, not having enough wages during your base period, or being disqualified because you were fired from your last position due to misconduct, among many others.

If you are denied unemployment benefits, Florida allows you to file an online appeal, by mail, or by fax. You will have 20 days to do so from the time you receive your determination notice. After receiving your appeal, the agency will schedule a telephone hearing and an appeals referee will rule on your case. A decision will then be mailed to you.

If you disagree with this decision, you can make an appeal to the Unemployment Appeals Commission, again within 20 days after you receive your notice. Commissioners will review your information and issue another written decision.

If you disagree with the Commissions findings, you can appeal that decision to the Florida District Court of Appeal.

Will My Stimulus Check Be Affected If I Owe Taxes

… or child support?

… or overdue on student loan payments?

While the CARES Act suspends debts like overdue student loans or back taxes that typically lead to the garnishment of tax refunds, it doesn’t apply to delinquent child support payments. That means the government’s relief checks will still be garnished if you’re overdue. And some spouses who are filing joint tax returns with their late-paying partners are upset their stimulus money is being trimmed or withheld, even if they typically qualify for relief in situations like tax refunds.

Even if your spouse is solely responsible for the debt, a shared tax refund or stimulus check could be at risk.

…. If I owe child support, does the stimulus money go to my ex?

The stimulus payment that is reduced or withheld by the child support owed will go to the appropriate collecting office for the taxpayer’s state. From there, that collecting office will issue the money to the custodial parent, the person due the child support.
