Kentucky Unemployment Filers Now Have To Register With Third
Kentucky’s state employment office at 6th and Cedar streets in downtown Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentuckians on unemployment now have to meet a new requirement before getting their benefits.
Starting Thursday, you must register through ID.me to register for unemployment. The third-party company verifies identity to prevent fraud within the unemployment system.
Kentucky leaders said more than two dozen other states and federal agencies use ID.me.
Filers won’t be able to access their claims until setting up an account and verifying their identity.
Anyone who needs unemployment help can schedule in-person or over the phone appointments at regional career center offices.

Kentucky Unemployment Website Shutting Down After Massive Cyberattack
FRANKFORT, Ky Kentuckys unemployment website will close temporarily beginning Thursday night due to a massive, sophisticated cyberattack on the UI system.
Gov. Andy Beshear and Kentucky Career Center General Counsel Amy Cubbage announced the four-day shutdown Thursday as a way to reset the system with stronger account security, including longer user PIN numbers.
While this is a big step, given that this sophisticated attack could take money that was otherwise going to Kentuckians, it is a step we absolutely have to take, Beshear said. We cant allow people to steal the states money and prevent those who are entitled to receive these dollars from getting the help they need.
The shutdown will be in effect for the public-facing website until Monday night. Claimants will not be able to file new claims or request benefits during that time. Users will be able to access the site again Tuesday morning.
Kentuckys internal unemployment system will still be operational, so claims processing will continue during the shutdown.
Claims filed after Monday can be back-dated, minimizing any interruption in the delivery of benefits.
A letter will also go out to claimants sometime in the next day. Every claimant will have to re-register their account, as if for the first time, according to Cubbage.
Claimants will need to:

Kentucky Unemployment If You Get Fired
Generally, in Kentucky you have to have lost your job through no fault of your own in order to collect unemployment.
In most cases, this means that if you get fired, you cannot collect unemployment benefits.
If you get fired from your job, you should go ahead and apply for unemployment benefits, because there are some cases where you can be fired from your job and still get benefits.
If you feel like you were fired unfairly, or there were extenuating circumstances, be sure to tell you unemployment counselor about them. If your unemployment application is denied because you were fired, you also have the right to appeal the decision.

However, if you have a disability or condition but are able to work with reasonable accommodation, you are considered able to work.
Types Of Disability Policies
There are two types of disability policies.
Short-term policies may pay for up to two years. Most last for a few months to a year.
Long-term policies may pay benefits for a few years or until the disability ends.
Employers who offer coverage may provide short-term coverage, long-term coverage, or both.

How Is The Account Hacking Happening
Cybercriminals are using automated programs to guess claimants four-digit PINs, Kentucky officials said. Simple and easy-to-guess PINs, such as 1234, make it easier for scammers to gain access to accounts.
Scammers also use compromised Social Security numbers and other personal information to gain access to accounts.
Kentucky officials say such personal information wasnt stolen in a data breach of the states unemployment system but rather was compromised in other breaches, such as those by private businesses.
This stolen personal information is then sold and bought online and can be misused by criminals.

According to the Kentucky Office of Unemployment, all claims must be filed online. They dont promise that every claim will be approved, as benefits are subject to rules and regulations. However, any employee can file an unemployment claim regardless of part-time, full-time or separation status.

Many unemployed residents of Kentucky choose to wait to file for unemployment until they have all of their documents collected. This choice however can delay them for weeks in which they could have been receiving benefits. Pink slips and severance package are not necessary when you begin to apply for unemployment benefits. In fact, the state of Kentucky does not provide benefits to cover any time prior to the initial claim, so it is important to file an unemployment claim as soon as you are terminated from your current employment.
