Frequently Asked Questions About 1099
Q – Why is my overpayment, which I repaid, not reported on my Form 1099-G?
A – Please refer to the back of your 1099-G RE: Restitution, Penalties and Interest – Monies repaid to the UIA during tax year 2021 are not deducted from the amount shown in Box 1. Refer to your federal 1040 instruction booklet for further information.
Q – If I repaid an overpayment during the tax year, will I have to repay the taxes that were withheld?
A – Yes, UIA paid taxes on your behalf to the federal and state taxing authority at the time your benefit payment was created or issued. Because it was determined that you were not entitled to the payment, the tax withholding paid on your behalf is also considered to have been overpaid. As a result, you must also repay UIA for the federal and state taxes paid on your behalf.
Q – Are PUA amounts included in the 1099-G?
A – Yes. Your 1099-G will include a combined total of benefits paid on any program a claimant was on including UI, PEUC, EB, PUA, TRA or DUA. This will also include additional amounts such as Pandemic Unemployment Compensation and Lost Wages Assistance .
Q – How can I get a duplicate 1099-G?
A – You can download a duplicate 1099-G from your MiWAM account. In your MiWAM account under “I Want To” click on the 1099-G link, or call UIA customer service at 866-500-0017.
Q – I paid back part or all of the amount reported on my 1099-G, Box 2. How do I get a corrected form?

Effect On Other Tax Benefits
Taxable unemployment benefits include the extra $600 per week that was provided by the federal government in response to the coronavirus pandemic, accountant Chip Capelli, of Provincetown, Massachusetts, told The Balance.
Not only is unemployment compensation taxable, but receiving it can also affect some tax credits you might be eligible for and are counting on to defray those 2020 taxes that will be due.
Something else to consider is if you usually get the Earned Income Credit each year, Capelli said. While unemployment benefits arent considered earned income, they do influence your adjusted gross income , which is used to calculate the EIC.
The American Rescue Plan Act also expanded eligibility for the EIC to include more households, including childless households, as well as increasing the maximum credit from $543 to $1,502.

If You Owe Tax You Cant Pay
Many Americans find themselves in a position where they still need every cent of those unemployment checks for living expenses, in which case theres no money left to send to the IRS for quarterly estimated tax payments. You might still have options if this is the case.
The IRS suggests paying what you can and reaching out to take advantage of one of its payment options to deal with the balance. You can ask for an installment agreement and pay off your tax debt on balances of up to $50,000 over 72 months, according to Capelli.
Making the request is a simple matter of filing Form 9465 with the IRS. This will at least cut the 0.5% per month late-payment penalty to 0.25%, although the effective interest rate will continue at 3% .
You might also look into an offer in compromise to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount you owe, or ask the IRS for a temporary delay in collecting if your financial situation is particularly difficult. But youll almost certainly need the help of a tax professional to exercise either of these options.
Capelli strongly recommended against taking out a loan to pay your tax bill except as a last resort.
Do not, under any circumstances, borrow money unless its interest-free, Capelli said. Dont use a credit card to pay your taxes. The IRS interest rate is lower than most credit cards, and the IRS payment plan doesnt appear on your credit report.
Why Would You Need W2 From Previous Employer
If you are a recent college graduate or someone who has been out of the workforce for a long time, you might not have all the documents that companies typically ask for when they interview their potential employees.
Employers might need to verify your employment eligibility, so they will need your Social Security Number and your previous employers tax form. If you havent asked for it before, this employer needs to submit an IRS Form W-2.
IRS Form W-2 is an important document employers use when they hire people. A copy of the W-2 must be given to employees by their boss once its filed with the IRS by their company, and they also need it to file their own tax return at the end of the year.
You need your previous W2 from your employer if youre going to file a tax return. This is usually required when youre looking for a new job and you want to compare your salary with the one that the employer is offering. It is also required when you want to apply for a new credit card, mortgage or line of credit.

What You Need To Do Before The Deadline For Reporting Income
Mostly people are confused about these two ways of reporting income. The first one is the 1099-MISC form, and the second one is W-2 form.
The 1099-MISC form is used for self-employed individuals, contract workers, and other types of nonemployees who receive payments for services they provide to their employers.
This kind of form generally provides both the employers tax ID number and your social security number or taxpayer ID so that you can report your earnings on your own taxes.
The W-2 form is a document that is given to employees who are paid by an employer during the year in wages, salary, commissions, bonuses, or other payments.

What To Do If You Cant Find Your W 2 Form
The W 2 form is usually mailed to you or made accessible online by the company you work for. If the form is lost, missing, or you cant find it online, contact your employer immediately. In addition, its a good idea to call the IRS if you dont receive the W2 by mid-February.
In the worst-case scenario, you can fill out Form 4852 and attach it to your tax return. The substitute wage and tax statement allows you to input the same details. A tax extension is another possibility and buys you more time.
Your best bet is to file on time. If the W 2 arrives later, and the information is different from your estimates provided, Form 1040X can be filled out to correct any discrepancies and amend the previous years tax return.
