Form 1099-G, Statement for Recipients of Certain Government Payments, is issued to any individual who received Maryland Unemployment Insurance benefits for the prior calendar year. The 1099-G reflects Maryland UI benefit payment amounts that were issued within that calendar year. This may be different from the week of unemployment for which the benefits were paid.
1099-Gs are required by law to be mailed by January 31st for the prior calendar year. By January 31, 2021, the Division will deliver the 1099-G for Calendar Year 2020. By January 31, 2021, the Division will send the 1099-G for Calendar Year 2020.
1099-Gs are not available until mid-January 2021. 1099-Gs are only issued to the individual to whom benefits were paid. If you have moved since filing for UI benefits, your 1099-G may NOT be forwarded by the United States Postal Service. The BPC unit cannot update your mailing address. You must update your mailing address by updating your personal information in the BEACON portal, on the Maryland Unemployment Insurance for Claimants mobile app, or by contacting a Claims Agent at 667-207-6520.

Q8 Why Did I Receive An Irs Cp08 Notice Saying I May Be Eligible For The Additional Child Tax Credit
A8. Because we made changes to your 2020 tax account to exclude unemployment compensation, you may be eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit. In November and December 2021, the IRS is sending the CP08 notice to individuals who did not claim the credit on their return but may now be eligible for it. This notice is not confirmation that you are eligible. You are not required to file an amended return to claim the Additional Child Tax Credit if you reply to the CP08 notice. You May Face A Delay If You Claim These Tax Credits
There are a couple of issues that could cause delays, even if you do everything correctly.
The IRS notes that it can’t issue a refund that involves the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit before mid-February. “The law provides this additional time to help the IRS stop fraudulent refunds from being issued,” the agency said this week.
That means if you file as soon as possible on January 24, you still might not receive a refund within the 21-day time frame if your tax return involves either of those tax credits. In fact, the IRS is informing those who claim these credits that they will most likely receive their refunds in early March, assuming they filed their returns on January 24 or close to that date.
The reason relates to a 2015 law that slows refunds for people who claim these credits, which was designed as a measure to combat fraudsters who rely on identity theft to grab taxpayer’s refunds.

Those who did not receive the first or second stimulus check could claim the funds through the Recovery Rebate Credit. If errors were made while the credit was claimed, individuals should expect a delay in receiving their returns. Additionally, if the return was incomplete, affected by identity theft or fraud, or Includes a claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit using 2019 income, the return may take longer to process.
What If I Collected Unemployment Compensation In 2020
The tax season shocker for many jobless people will be that their tax refund could be far smaller than expected, or they might even owe taxes.
Taxes arent withheld automatically from unemployment benefits. If you are unemployed in 2021, and receiving unemployment compensation, you may want to take action to have federal taxes withheld in the future.
Look out for Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments, to show how much unemployment compensation was paid to you in 2020. See Box 1 for the taxable income you must report on Line 7 on Schedule 1 of the 1040.

Three in four Americans receive an annual tax refund from the IRS, which often is a family’s biggest check of the year. But with this tax season now in progress, taxpayers could see a repeat of last year’s snarls in processing, when more than 30 million taxpayers had their returns and refunds held up by the IRS.
Treasury Department officials warned in January that this year’s tax season will be a challenge with the IRS starting to process returns on January 24. That’s largely due to the IRS’ sizable backlog of returns from 2021. As of December 31, the agency had 6 million unprocessed individual returns a significant reduction from a backlog of 30 million in May, but far higher than the 1 million unprocessed returns that is more typical around the start of tax season.

Do You Owe Taxes On Unemployment Benefits
Yes, unemployment checks are taxable income. If you received unemployment benefits in 2021, you will owe income taxes on that amount. Your benefits may even raise you into a higher income tax bracket, though you shouldn’t worry too much about getting into a higher tax bracket.
People who file for unemployment have the option to have income taxes withheld from their unemployment checks, and many do. If you elected to do this, you have little to worry about.
What if you didn’t choose to have income taxes withheld from your unemployment checks? Don’t panic. If you were employed during much of the year, you may simply see a reduced tax return or a very small tax bill when you file.
What If I Dont Have The Funds To Pay My Tax Balance Due
If you cant pay the full amount of taxes you owe, you should still file your return by the deadline and pay as much as you can to minimize penalties and interest. Unemployment Federal Tax Break
The latest COVID-19 relief bill , gives a federal tax break on unemployment benefits. This means that you dont have to pay federal tax on the first $10,200 of your unemployment benefits if your adjusted gross income is less than $150,000 in 2020. The $150,000 income limit is the same whether you are filing single or married.
For paper filers, the IRS published instructions on how to claim the unemployment tax break: New Exclusion of up to $10,200 of Unemployment Compensation. For online filers, the IRS has stated that tax software companies have updated their systems to reflect the unemployment federal tax break. If you file your taxes online and havent filed for 2020 yet, you may want to make sure your tax software is updated before filing your tax return.
If you filed your 2020 tax return before this new law change, the IRS is asking you not to file an amended return and not to take any additional steps. The IRS will automatically issue refunds starting in May and into the summer to those who qualify. If you claimed tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit , the IRS will also automatically issue refunds if you qualify for a higher amount because the tax break changed your income level.
If your state decides to give you a state tax break and you already filed your state return, you should check to see if you are newly eligible for any state tax credits.
Unemployment Compensation Refund Checks
The IRS hasnt made an announcement on whether or not there will be checks. For the time being, its too early to say, as it only has been a day since the refunds were issued. As soon as the IRS makes a statement about checks, well keep you updated. In the meantime, you can check the refund status online through the Wheres My Refund tool.
One side note to keep in mind is that the refunds are sent automatically to taxpayers that the IRS has their payment information. If you dont have your bank account information with the IRS, youll get a refund check.

Some Tax Returns Take Longer To Process Than Others For Many Reasons Including When A Return:

Effect On Other Tax Benefits
Taxable unemployment benefits include the extra $600 per week that was provided by the federal government in response to the coronavirus pandemic, accountant Chip Capelli, of Provincetown, Massachusetts, told The Balance.
Not only is unemployment compensation taxable, but receiving it can also affect some tax credits you might be eligible for and are counting on to defray those 2020 taxes that will be due.
Something else to consider is if you usually get the Earned Income Credit each year, Capelli said. While unemployment benefits arent considered earned income, they do influence your adjusted gross income , which is used to calculate the EIC.
The American Rescue Plan Act also expanded eligibility for the EIC to include more households, including childless households, as well as increasing the maximum credit from $543 to $1,502.

Paying Unemployment Taxes At The Federal Level
There are 3 options to pay your federal income taxes on your unemployment benefits. If you dont expect your benefits to add much to any tax you owe, it may be easiest to pay the full amount at tax time. The following options can help you avoid having a large bill at tax time.
1. Request your state employment agency to withhold your federal taxes. Withholding your taxes means that a flat 10 percent of each of your unemployment checks will be used to pay federal taxes, similar to withholding taxes on a regular paycheck.
Usually, you can choose to have your taxes withheld when you first register for unemployment benefits. You can also complete and give Form W-4V, Voluntary Withholding Request to the agency that is disbursing your unemployment benefits to start withholding your taxes. Request Form W-4V, Voluntary Withholding Request from your unemployment office or find it on the IRS website. If your agency has its own withholding form, use that one instead.
Use the Estimated Tax Payments Calculator to make sure that you are withholding enough taxes from your unemployment benefits. If too little tax is withheld, you may also have to make quarterly estimated tax payments to avoid an underpayment penalty.
Depending on the amount of your unemployment benefits and your other sources of income, you may choose to make quarterly estimated payments and withhold your taxes if your total tax withholding does not cover enough of the income taxes you will owe.
The Unemployment Tax Waiver Could Save You Thousands Of Dollars
This tax break could provide a tax savings of thousands of dollars depending on your tax situation.
With current individual tax rates ranging from 10% to 37%, the potential tax savings can vary from $1,020 to $3,825, Johnson says. The amount, of course, depends on the taxpayers filing status, income and other factors, such as deductions claimed on the tax return.
For example, if you qualify for the $10,200 tax break, youre single and are in the 22% tax bracket, you may qualify for a tax savings of $2,244. And if you are married and both you and your spouse qualify for the tax break, you may be able to save $4,488.

You may send the form back to NYSDOL via your online account, by fax, or by mail. Follow the instructions on the bottom of the form.
Once NYSDOL receives your completed Request for 1099-G Review form, it will be reviewed, and we will send you an amended 1099-G tax form or a letter of explanation.

What Do I Do About Missing Tax Forms
If you havent received your income forms, you should first contact the employer and request a copy or ask that it be re-sent. If that doesnt work, you can then contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 . Youll need to provide the following information:

- Your employers name, address, and phone number
- Dates you worked for your employer
- An estimate of your paid wages and federal income tax withheld during 2020
Unemployment compensation is taxable. However, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 allows an exclusion of unemployment compensation of up to $10,200 for individuals for taxable year 2020. In the case of married individuals filing a joint Form 1040 or 1040-SR, this exclusion is up to $10,200 per spouse. To qualify for this exclusion, your adjusted gross income must be less than $150,000. This threshold applies to all filing statuses and it doesnt double to $300,000 if you are married and file a joint return. Any unemployment compensation in excess of $10,200 should still be included on the tax return as taxable income.
