To calculate the amount of the benefit you are entitled to, the state of New York unemployment process uses one of two possible base periods. Base periods are divided into calendar quarters and the quarter you were paid the highest amount of wages determines the amount of your New York unemployment weekly claims. While you can determine ahead of time how much New York unemployment compensation you receive, you will be formally notified before your benefits begin.

New Yorks Basic Base Period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to the beginning date of the UI claim. If you have earned enough wages in your Basic Base Period, those wages will be used to calculate your benefit amount.

If you do not have enough wages in the Basic Base Period to establish a claim, you may be able to use an Alternate Base Period. It is the last four completed calendar quarters prior to the beginning of the claim.

If you have enough wages in the Basic Base Period, the state will not automatically check to see if your benefit amount would be higher in the Alternate Base Period. If you think your New York unemployment amount would be higher, you can request that the state use your Alternate Base Period instead.

To qualify for NY unemployment benefits, you must meet the following earnings requirements during one of your base periods:

How To Calculate Benefits

New York obligingly provides an interactive calculator on its Department of Labor website that will basically figure all this out for you, although the site warns that it’s not a guarantee of how much you’ll receive after your file is reviewed.

An annual income of $35,000 works out to $8,750 per quarter, assuming your hours and earnings didn’t fluctuate from month to month. This works out to about $2,917 a month, or $729 a week. You’d receive $336 a week using either the base period or the alternate base period calculation, according to the interactive calculator. This is somewhat less than the half-your-earnings estimate.

You can request that the state calculate your benefits using your alternate base period if your income isn’t consistent over each and every quarter and you think your benefits would be more based on this other method. New York won’t automatically try both calculations, however, so it’s up to you to ask.

How You Can Get The Additional $300 Unemployment

Unemployed New Yorkers to get extra $300 per week

The federal Lost Wages Assistance Program was approved for New York after the state applied last month for part of $44 billion in federal unemployment aid made available unilaterally Aug. 8 by President Donald Trump amid gridlock over a new stimulus package in Washington.

A $600 a week unemployment benefit from the federal government expired at the end of July.

The state was approved initially for three weeks of $300 payments.

Now unemployed workers will get another $300 a week which is on top of the up to $504 a week through the state’s own unemployment system.

The state estimated 2.3 million New Yorkers are eligible for the second round of Lost Wages Assistance payments

They include:

  • About 2.1 million who are pre-qualified because they have previously indicated that their unemployment was connected to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those New Yorkers will receive an email and text message informing them they are pre-qualified and do not need to take any further action as they had during the first round of funding.

  • 157,000 are eligible for one or more weeks of payments, but have not submitted a certification indicating they were unemployed due to the pandemic, as required by the federal government.

Those New Yorkers have already received a secure DocuSign email from NYS DOL with a link to certify or can call 833-491-0632 to certify through an automated phone system, the labor department said.

How Your Benefits Are Calculated

When determining how much money you are entitled to through the unemployment benefits program, New York State experts use simple calculations to decide how much you should be given up to the maximum amount of $430 per week. This amount is calculated by looking at your highest-paid quarter during the Base Period used to determine your eligibility, and dividing that amount by 26 weeks.

In other words, a quarter of your annual earnings is divided by approximately half a years worth of weeks. You would have had to make around $11,000 in your highest-paid quarter in order to qualify for the maximum benefit payout from the government.

Use this simple calculation to quickly determine how much you can expect to get from the government if you are approved for unemployment benefits. The results may be slightly different than what you calculate, but they should be similar.
