The Department of Justice Insurance Fraud Task Force is investigating numerous fraud schemes targeting state unemployment agencies, including TWC.
Criminal actors are filing fraudulent unemployment claims using stolen identities.
Because unemployment benefits are taxable, TWC issues Form 1099-G to the Internal Revenue Service and claimants. Individuals may receive Form 1099-G indicating that they were paid unemployment benefits for a claim they did not file. If you received a Form 1099-G for unemployment benefits on a claim you did not file, you should report it immediately using the online portal.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Reset Pin From The Georgia Department Of Labor
Within 48 hours after you verify your identity with ID.me, you will get an additional email from the Georgia Department of Labor .
This email contains an authorization code you can use to unlock your account.
After your account is unlocked, you can reset your PIN.
If it has been more than 48 hours and you still have not received an email from GDOL about resetting your PIN, please contact GDOL directly for further assistance.
Identity Theft And Your Irs Tax Return
Everyone who receives unemployment benefits will get an IRS Form 1099-G , used for reporting the income on your tax returns. When you file your federal income tax return, you must report income you received, but you should not report income that you did not receive. When you file your income taxes, only include income you actually received. Do not wait to receive a corrected 1099-G to file your taxes. Refer to the Identity Theft and Unemployment Benefits page on IRS.gov for updates and additional tax filing information.
If you get a Form 1099-G but did not claim unemployment benefits or collect any or all the benefits listed on the Form, report the ID theft claim to TWC using the online Unemployment Fraud Submission portal and visit the IRS website for guidance on ID theft involving unemployment benefits. Once TWC has confirmed an individuals identity has been stolen, TWC will send a corrected report to the IRS.

What Employers Can Do If You Suspect Id Theft
Employers may receive a Notice of Application for Unemployment Benefits, a Request for Work Separation Information, or other form from TWC requesting information on a claim. If you receive a notice for an employee who is still working, or for a person who never worked for you, please respond to the notice immediately. If your employee receives material from TWC for an unemployment claim they did not file, you should advise your employee to report the ID theft claim using TWCs online portal. While either you or your employee may report the suspected ID theft using the portal, we prefer that the information comes directly from the person whose identity was stolen. You may have recently received a text message asking if you used ID.me to log in to your state unemployment agency. This is an automated alert from ID.me that is designed to protect your identity from unauthorized use.
- Do not take any action if you remember signing into ID.me.
- Reply “N” if you do not remember logging into ID.me. The ID.me account will be suspended and flagged for investigation.

If you have recently lost your job, you are probably anxious to start collecting unemployment benefits. Unemployment is available to those who are temporarily out of work, through no fault of their own. To qualify for unemployment benefits, you must file a claim with your state unemployment agency. The agency will then review your application, perhaps interview you , and make an eligibility determination. If the agency finds that you’re eligible for benefits, it will calculate your benefit amount and begin paying your benefits.
This article explains how the process generally works. However, each state follows its own procedures for handling unemployment claims. To find out how long you should expect to wait to start receiving benefits, contact your state’s unemployment agency.

A viewer working through the ID.me process talked with a representative of EDD on the phone and shared these tips to help you verify your identity more quickly:
- You should provide your non-expired state ID or passport as your primary ID.
- When it comes to the secondary ID, the EDD rep said the W2 would take the least amount of time to verify because employer information is already in the state system.
- If you do not have your W2 for 2019, the last paycheck stub for 2019 would suffice so long as it has your name, address, partial SSN and company information.
- Bank or utility statements can take up to 2-3 weeks to verify.
- Birth certificates and social security earning statements can take 4+ weeks to verify.

How Do I Verify My Identity With Idme

Its been more than a year since the pandemic began, and despite big changes on the part of the unemployment agency, were still seeing some of the same problems that plagued the system last spring.

What Could Be Holding Up Your Payments
When youve reached a year on your unemployment claim, some people can just keep recertifying every week on their existing claim while others need to file a new claim. According to the DOL, you should have gotten an email or text message with instructions about what to do, and a DocuSign form to fill out. Thats the first tip.
1. Fill out the DocuSign form.
Whether you need to file a new claim or not, everyone needs to fill out the DocuSign form to continue receiving benefits. This is not the same thing as filing a new claim.
2. Triple check to make sure you dont need to file a new claim.
If you are receiving Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, or PUA, you can just keep recertifying and dont need to file a new claim. But if you are collecting traditional unemployment insurance , you may need to.
You need to file a new claim if you have made more than 10 times your weekly benefit in total over the last year from an employer.
For example, if your weekly benefit amount is $150, then 10 times that is $1,500. So, if youve gone back to work even temporarily and have made at least $1,500 in total in the span of the year when your claim has been open, then you need to file a new claim when you reach your BYE date. Once again, this means $1,500 in total, not just in one week.

Important note: New claims can take two to three weeks to process, and your payments may get backed up.

Nurse Waiting Six Months For Uia To Verify Her Identity
MUSKEGON, Mich. A nurse who was laid off during the pandemic is still fighting with Michigans Unemployment Insurance agency trying to verify her identity.
Shes waited six months so far and still no answers, despite sending her ID documents in several times to the agency.
ID VERIFICATION
Why dont you believe who I am, LaDonna Yandell said with a chuckle. Thats probably my biggest question: What else can I do to prove I am who I say I am?
Yandell is a pastors wife who cannot seem to get a response from the UIA.
I do not have a familiar name, and if you Google my identity, theres not another LaDonna Yandell in the United States that Im aware of, she said.
Shes sent in her identity documents several times but still no movement on the claim and no money.
Its like how what are they doing to try to verify who I am? Ive sent them everything that I have, said Yandell. Nobody else has my social security card or my marriage license or my birth certificate.

NURSESâ LAYOFF
Yandells been a nurse for more than three decades. She applied for benefits after her former employer shut down entirely last summer.
We closed down due to COVID, completely closed the doors. In fact, this last week they tore the building down, she said.
Yandell tells FOX 17 that dealing with COVID is one of the scariest things of her life.

Innocent Texans Suffering From Fraud Attack
For six weeks, Damon Bonewitz hasnt missed a single payment request. He also hasnt seen a dollar in unemployment benefits after the TWC locked his account in April.
Bonewitz recently lost his job because of the economic impact of the pandemic.
He got a letter on April 30 telling him the identity verification hold on his claim was unlocked after he went through the ID.me verification process.
Bonewitz agreed to meet us in an Austin hardware stores parking lot. He came armed with every document related to his unemployment claim, including the letter telling him to verify his identity.
They want their response as soon as possible by 5/5, which, I mean, I did it within 24 hours of notification, Bonewitz said. He also had to participate in a live video feed to prove he was not a fraudster.
Nearly a month later, he never got a response from the TWC.
Its very frustrating. Its ruining my credit Im increasing my credit cards. I didnt ask to be unemployed, he said. My wife and I were planning to buy a house. We had a deposit down, we were pre-approved for a loan we just got thrown into the works.
Weve spoken with Texans whove waited longer than six weeks to have their fraud flags cleared by the TWC.
Bonewitz, an innocent Texan, is one of the lucky ones. The day after our interview, he got a notice from the TWC the fraud investigation into his claim was finished and his owed unemployment was deposited into his bank account.

What About My Privacy

- To create your ID.me account, enter an email address you can access and choose a password. Click the checkbox to accept ID.mes terms and conditions and privacy policy. Then, click Create account.
- Check your inbox for an email from ID.me. Click the button in the email to confirm your email address. Then, return to your browser. The page will automatically move forward to the next step.
Secure your account
- Choose an option for multi-factor authentication . You can receive a passcode via text message or phone call. You can also choose one of the other listed methods which use a phone app or physical key fob to securely send the passcode.
- Most people choose to send the passcode to their phone. Just enter your phone number and then check your text messages or answer the phone to receive your 6-digit passcode.
