The EI program offers temporary financial assistance to unemployed workers. This assistance includes providing maternity benefits and parental benefits.

The Province of Quebec is responsible for providing maternity, paternity, parental, and adoption benefits to residents of Quebec through a program called the Quebec Parental Insurance Program. You may also be eligible if you lost your full-time job and have only been able to find occasional or limited part-time work. Depending on your state’s rules, you may be eligible for partial benefits if you had two part-time jobs and lost one of them. However, regardless of how your state determines eligibility for partial benefits, you will not be eligible if you could be working more. For example, if you voluntarily chose to reduce your hours or work part time so you could take care of your children, you would not be eligible.
  • You meet your state’s minimum earnings or minimum hours worked requirements. These are the same whether you apply for regular or partial unemployment benefits.
  • You are able and available to work more. In other words, if your hours are cut to ten per week, you won’t be eligible if you decide to go back to school full time and wouldn’t be able to work more hours.

How Partial Benefits Are Calculated

Most states calculate the total amount of your benefits by first figuring out what you would have been entitled to if you were still fully unemployed. The amount you’re earning through part-time employment will usually be subtracted from this figure.

For example, in New York, you can work up to seven days a week without losing unemployment benefits for that week if you work 30 hours or fewer and earn $504 or less in gross pay, excluding earnings from self-employment. Benefits will be reduced in increments based on your total hours of work for the week rather than on the number of days you work.;

In New Jersey, you must earn a minimum of $220 a week to be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. Partial benefits are calculated based on the hours you work and how much you earn.

What Materials Do I Need

Before you sit down to complete your online claims application, gather as much information as you can about your employment. Know when your last day of work was, have as much information about your employer on hand as possible including their employer identification number, if you know it and have a pay stub nearby. How To Calculate Your Payment Amount

Part-time workers can now base their unemployment claims on the hours they work in a week and not the days, according to a Jan. 18 announcement by Gov. Cuomo.

Prior to that day, weekly benefits were calculated based on the number of days you work.
