I Am About To Exhaust My Regular Unemployment Compensation Benefits What Kinds Of Relief Does The Cares Act Provide For Me

Under the CARES Act states are permitted to extend unemployment benefits by up to 13 weeks under the new Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program. PEUC benefits are available for weeks of unemployment beginning after your state implements the new program and ending with weeks of unemployment ending on or before December 31, 2020. The program covers most individuals who have exhausted all rights to regular unemployment compensation under state or federal law and who are able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work as defined by state law. Importantly, the CARES Act gives states flexibility in determining whether you are actively seeking work if you are unable to search for work because of COVID-19, including because of illness, quarantine, or movement restrictions.

In addition, if you have exhausted the 13 weeks of additional benefits available under the PEUC program, you may be eligible to continue receiving benefits under the PUA program. PUA benefits are available for a period of unemployment of up to 39 weeks, meaning that if you have exhausted regular UC and PEUC benefits in fewer than 39 weeks, you may be eligible to receive assistance under PUA for the remaining weeks within PUAs 39 week period.

I Submitted My Application But Havent Received Benefits Yet

CA EDD Work Search Requirements | Do You Have To Sign Up For CalJOBS?

14. I recently submitted my application. How long will it take for me to start receiving benefits?

The wait time for receiving benefits is generally 21 days to a month. However, due to the record number of people applying for UI, it may take longer. If your company did not pay payroll taxes on your earnings, or you were misclassified as an independent contractor, you will likely have to provide proof of your earnings to the EDD, and it will take longer for the EDD to process your claim. We recommend contacting the EDD if you have not heard back from them in 6 weeks.

15. I received a Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award stating that Im entitled to $0 in benefits. What does this mean?

Several scenarios may result in you receiving a Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award stating that you are entitled to $0 in benefits. Each scenario has a different recommended course of action:

The EED could not verify your identity. If the EDD needs to verify your identity, they will either verify your identity through ID.me, UI Online, or mail. The EDD will send you a message telling you which platform to use to verify your identity:

Once the EDD verifies your identity, you will receive a new notice indicating what the EDDs wage records show for your weekly UI benefit payments .

You are self-employed or an independent contractor and you have not paid contributions to the state Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. You should apply for PUA.

How Do I File A Weekly Benefits Request In Virginia

To maintain unemployment insurance eligibility in VA, a weekly benefits request must be filed each week to maintain benefit payments. On the form, there will be fields for entering work contacts made, any changes in income and any hours worked. The most important part of the weekly request is that the information on prospective employers is accurate. Incorrectly entering a phone number for a work search contact, for example, could cause a claim to be immediately denied. A few exceptions exist, such as illness or injury, but in all other cases an applicant is expected to make at least three job contacts per week.
