What If I Cant Leave My Home Because I Must Care For My Child During The Pandemic Or Because I Have Covid
An individual in any of those situations would be unemployed through no fault of theirown and might be eligible for UI benefits. However, to qualify for UI, theywould still need to meet all other eligibility requirements. For example, the individual must be able and available for work, and show that they are seeking work from home. Individuals can be considered able and available to work if there is some work that they could perform from home .This individual also must prove that they left their job due to their employer. However, there is an exception to the requirement that the reason for leaving is due to the employer. That exception is when an individual quits a job because a licensed and practicing physician deems them unable to perform the work or when their employer is unable to accommodate the individuals need to care for a family member who has been verified to be in poor health or to have a disability.
You Made A Mistake On Your Claim
If youre filing for the first time, or the claim forms have changed, or your states filing system has changed, then its easy to make a mistake on your unemployment application. Unfortunately, sometimes the smallest thing, such as failing to check a box, can keep your claim from being automatically approved. Instead, it will end up in a long queue of claims that need a human to review them.
Here are some of the mistakes that people make when filing for unemployment.
Receive Your Benefit Payments
It takes at least three weeks to process a claim for unemployment benefits and issue payment to most eligible workers.
When your first benefit payment is available, you will receive a debit card in the mail. Once you activate the card you can track, use, and transfer your benefit payments. Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs, so you should keep it until it expires.
If you received Unemployment Insurance, Disability Insurance, or Paid Family Leave benefits on a debit card in the last three years, you will receive your benefit payments on that card. If your card has expired, a new card will automatically be sent to you once funds are available.
Note: If you were issued a debit card before 2015, you must request a new one. Visit Bank of Americas website or contact Bank of America at 1-866-692-9374 .
If you lost your debit card, contact Bank of America as early as possible in the application process to request a replacement card before your first payment. Your new card will arrive 7 to 10 business days from the order date. You have a couple options to request a new card:
- Visit the Bank of America website.
- Contact Bank of America at 1-866-692-9374 . You do not need to have your old card number or speak to a representative. Choose the Lost or Stolen option in the automated menu. The call center is experiencing higher than normal wait times and Bank of America is working to address the issue.

Your State Is Overwhelmed With New Jobless Benefits Applications
The most likely reason why you havent yet received your unemployment check is probably also the most frustrating: State unemployment agencies have been inundated with new filings and are hard-pressed to process them in a timely manner. This could be the underlying reason why you havent yet received your payment, whether youre marked as approved or still pending.
Its taking administrators a lot longer to verify your information, work history, earnings and reason for leaving hoops and hurdles before your checks start coming. Many states are also using outdated systems and technology to process these claims. States are also having to keep existing payments flowing while still figuring out how to process new claims.
The coronavirus pandemics economic upheaval has been unprecedented. Nearly 6.9 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits during the week that ended on March 28, the highest on record and far eclipsing the previous surge of 695,000 in October of 1982. By the end of May, almost 1 in 4 U.S. workers would apply for weekly benefits and would hold in the millions for five straight months.
Why Did Benefits End Early In So Many States
Citing labor shortages in the spring, 26 state governors claimed pandemic-related unemployment benefits were producing limited incentives for workers to take jobs. Many economists and analysts disagreed, highlighting several factors that prevented people from finding suitable work, including low wages, lack of health care, inadequate child care and fear of contracting COVID-19.
With unemployment claims still fluctuating as the economy struggles to return to pre-pandemic “normalcy,” reports are showing that the early cancellation of the federal programs had little impact on labor markets. A recent JP Morgan Chase Institute study confirmed that states that ended supplemental unemployment insurance programs during the summer saw a limited impact on job growth.
According to an August report by the Century Foundation’s Andrew Stettner, “Politics, not economics, drove the attack on unemployment insurance.” The states that cut off the enhanced benefits before the federal expiration were mostly Republican-led.
Arkansas, Indiana and Maryland were slated to cut off benefits early, but successful lawsuits forced those states to preserve the federal coverage, at least temporarily. In issuing their rulings, judges noted that the ending of benefits made it harder for the unemployed to afford basic needs. Lawsuits were also filed against state governors elsewhere, which were either denied by judges or are still held up in the courts.

Is There Anything I Can Do If My Claim For Unemployment Benefits Is Denied
Yes. You have a right to appeal the denial decision. You may be asked to submit your side of the story by phone or in writing, and you will likely have the opportunity to appear at a hearing and argue your case. Contact your state unemployment agency or labor department to find out how to appeal a denial of unemployment benefits. Who Lost Federal Unemployment Benefits On Labor Day
At the very start of the pandemic, the March 2020 CARES Act established temporary federal unemployment aid programs, and the American Rescue Plan in March 2021 extended those benefits to Labor Day. Here’s who was affected by the programs’ expiration, according to a detailed analysis of Labor Department data by the Century Foundation.
More than 3 million additional people lost Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, the weekly bonus — initially $600, then $300 — that helped out-of-work Americans supplement benefits and recover some lost wages. If you’re still eligible to collect state unemployment insurance , you’ll continue to receive some compensation after the cutoff. But the amount will be lower without the weekly $300 bonus.
Some 3.3 million people lost all their Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, or PEUC, which extended aid to those who had already exhausted their state’s benefits period . This category includes workers who would have no longer been eligible to receive unemployment because they passed their state’s benefit window. The program provided up to 53 weeks of additional aid for those who had exceeded state allowances.
That’s not the full picture of everyone affected by unemployment. Reported jobless rates generally don’t account for those who have left the labor force entirely and are no longer counted as looking for work, such as the long-term unemployed.

Your Direct Deposit Information Was Incorrect
Signing up for direct deposit is often a faster, more secure way to get your unemployment benefits. However, its easy to make a mistake when youre typing in your routing or account number.
Try logging in to your unemployment benefit account and verifying that your information is correct. You might ask someone whom you trust to read aloud the numbers you entered while you look at one of your checks and make sure that things match up.

Your State Unemployment Department Is Overwhelmed
Again according to reporting by The Washington Post, states are still behind on processing claims 14 months into the pandemic. Theyve simply been overwhelmed by volume this entire time. Not only were far more people unemployed but also people normally not eligible for benefits, such as self-employed workers, became eligible, adding to the demands on states systems.
Can Some People Collect More Than Their Prior Wages
Yes, this is possible as a result of the $600-a-week supplement to state benefits.
Prior to this supplement, unemployment insurance replaced about a third of the average worker’s prior wages, according to the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research.
More from Personal Finance
The goal of the supplement was to replace 100% of the average worker’s pay. But some making low to moderate incomes could get more.

Ui Back Payments With End Of Extended Unemployment Programs
With the expiry of federal enhanced unemployment benefit programs like PUA, PEUC, $300 FPUC and $100 MEUC after September 6th 2021 in all states, there have been a lot of questions around what happens with ongoing, new and past payments.
Ongoing and new weekly payments will end after September 6th . This means a cessation of federal pandemic unemployment benefits for 8 million+ jobless or under-employed claimants which that will result in them losing all current and future benefits under the PUA, PEUC or supplementary $300 FPUC programs.
States like New Jersey and California, have already stated that validated claims after a successful determination or appeal for eligible weeks would be paid out over the next several weeks. Note, per the sections below, that back payments are limited to the program extension coverage periods.
Eligible Claimants should continue to certify for benefits for weeks they are owed unemployment. Any weeks of unemployment that occurred before these programs expire can still be paid retroactively if a claimant is later determined to be eligible for those weeks of benefits. Check your state unemployment website for more details on certifying for retroactive back payments.

Your Application Might Be Getting Vetted For Fraud
State unemployment offices have been hit massively with fraud. The FBI in July announced that they had seen a spike in fraudulent UI claims relating to the pandemic, which involved fake filers using stolen personally identifiable information. Other fraudulent applicants have used the names and personal information of people who have not lost their jobs, further overwhelming the system and costing states money.
To stop the problem, some states have started requiring more forms of ID. Others, such as California, have decided to pause making payments and accepting new applications for two weeks, so they can get control of the problem and work through their backlog.
All of these peoples benefits are frozen while theyre flagged, and the state has got to verify their identity, Evermore says. Thats not always easy to do.

What To Watch Out For
- You may pay a fee to cash your check if you dont do so at your bank
- Once deposited, it might take a few days before all your money is available for use
Remember, checks can take a few days to arrive so this may not be the best option if you need funds quickly. If you have your own bank or credit union account or prepaid card, you may be able to use a mobile banking app to capture an image of the check and have it deposited into these personal accounts. Otherwise, you may need to make a trip to a financial institution to cash or deposit it, but be aware that it may take a few days until all the money appears in your account and is available for you to use.
When Can I Apply For Unemployment
Once your job ends and you apply, you have to wait a week before making a claim. As soon as your job has ended, youre no longer working, so you can apply for unemployment insurance through your state department of labor.
If youre still owed severance or a final paycheck, you have to report that income, which would likely reduce the amount of unemployment youd get in the short term.
All states require a non-paid valid Waiting Week period before payments are processed.

Will I Get My Retroactive Or Back Payments If My States End Benefits Early
With many states ending their participation in the federally funded unemployment programs several weeks earlier than the September 6th end date, a lot of claimants who have had delays or issues with their claims getting paid were naturally worried if they would get back payments. The answer is Yes. Because the funds are allocated at a federal level, the state unemployment agencies are obligated to pay any eligible new or existing claim payments prior to the end date of the states participation in the program.
States had to provide 30 days notice to the US DOL prior to ending the PUA, PEUC, $300 FPUC programs. This also requires them to ensure retroactive payments are made on claims prior to this notice period. After the states termination date no new or active claim payments will be made. Not surprisingly many states are still struggling with large backlogs and fraudulent claims, so it is expected it could take several weeks for some states to make back payments for eligible weeks.

Slow Rollouts Of Pua Extensions In 2021
The rollout of the various extensions for the PUA program have continued to be painfully slow in many states. Especially for those who had exhausted their benefits. I discussed this PUA video and as of mid-February only about 60% of states are paying PUA benefits to new and exhausted claimants . There is not much do to and despite the frustration and having to live on the edge of poverty, you will just have to wait for your state to update their UI systems so you can file claims for getting your current and retroactive payments.
Can You Still Collect Unemployment If You Start A New Job
When you get a new job, report it even if you have not started work yet. Your benefit amount each week is based on wages earned, not on whether or not you have a pending job. Consequently, your weekly benefit amount wont be affected until you actually start working.
