Required Documentation To File An Unemployment Claim
Your claim will get processed more quickly if you bring the proper documentation when you visit the local office or have it handy if you are applying by phone or online. You will need:
- recent pay stubs and other wage records, such as the W-2 form on which your employer reports your income to the Internal Revenue Service
- your Social Security card, or another document that shows your Social Security number, and
- any documentation you have that proves you are unemployed, such as a layoff or dismissal notice from your employer, and your employer’s unemployment insurance account number, if you know it.
Typically, the unemployment insurance claims office will require some type of orientation, ranging from reading simple explanatory pamphlets to attending sophisticated video productions or live group seminars. Compliance is mandatory.
Did Not Work In Washington State
You cannot apply for unemployment benefits in Washington or file weekly claims here if you did not work in this state during the past 18 months. The only exceptions are if you were in the military or worked for the federal government.
You must file your claim with one of the state where you worked in the last 18 months. Contact each state where you worked to find out your claim options for those states.
Requirements For Unemployment Insurance
An unemployed person must meet two primary requirements to qualify for unemployment insurance benefits. An unemployed individual must meet state-mandated thresholds for either earned wages or time worked in a stated base period. The state must also determine that the eligible person is unemployed through no fault of their own. A person may file an unemployment insurance claim when fulfilling these two requirements.
Individuals file claims in the state where they work. A participant may file claims by phone or on the state unemployment insurance agency’s website. After the first application, it generally takes two to three weeks for the processing and approval of a claim.
After approval of a claim, the participant must either file weekly or biweekly reports that test or confirm their employment situation. Reports must be submitted to remain eligible for benefit payments. An unemployed worker cannot refuse work during a week, and on each weekly or biweekly claim, they must report any income that they earned from freelance or consulting gigs.

Budget For Less Than Your Old Paycheck
Not only does each state have its own unemployment rules, each state also pays out a different amount for unemployment.
In many states, youll get roughly half of what you earned at your job each week for up to 26 weeks. But other states have a different formula thats less generous, so the overall average replacement rate is closer to 40%. And in some states, the benefits period can be as short as 12 weeks.
But as part of the same CARES Act that expanded eligibility, Congress also added an additional 13 weeks of unemployment funding. So right now, depending on your state, you might be eligible for up to 39 weeks of unemployment benefits.
Also, each state has a cap, or maximum amount, you can get, and that maximum amount varies significantly depending on where you live. According to figures provided by Evermore, the lowest is $235 in Mississippi, and the highest is in Massachusetts at $1,192, including additional dependent allowances.
So if you were lucky enough to have a well-paying job, youll probably get a lot less than half of your previous salary each week from your unemployment claim.

Millions of taxpayers remain in limbo without any news on refunds for 2020 unemployment benefits.
The IRS has sent 8.7 million unemployment compensation refunds so far.
This summer, the IRS started making adjustments on 2020 tax returns and issuing refunds averaging around $1,600 to those who qualify for a $10,200 unemployment tax break. The tax agency said adjustments would be made throughout the summer, but the last batch of refunds — which went out to some 1.5 million taxpayers — was two months ago. No rounds of payments seem to have gone out last month, and it’s already October.
Here’s a summary of what those refunds are about: The first $10,200 of 2020 jobless benefits was made nontaxable income by the American Rescue Plan in March, so taxpayers who filed their returns before the legislation and paid taxes on those benefits are due money back.
Though some have reported online that their tax transcripts show pending deposit dates, others haven’t received any clues at all. Many are wondering how to get a live agent to ask with questions or if they should file an amended return. The IRS’ massive backlog of unprocessed returns doesn’t help the matter. The tax agency is also busy sending out stimulus payments, child tax credit checks and adjusting late 2020 tax returns.

Choose How To Get Your Benefits
You can choose to have your benefits paid in one of two ways. You can have them put on a debit card from the UIA, or you can have your benefits directly deposited into your bank or credit union account. If you choose direct deposit, you will need the routing transit number and your account number.

Talk To Your Employer If Youre Called Back To Work
Finally, what if your company has remained closed but finally reopens and calls you back to work? That means you have a current offer of employment and are no longer eligible to receive unemployment benefits.
Exceptions are available if youve been told by a health provider to quarantine, or if youre caring for children while schools are closed. But remote schooling generally doesnt count as a school being closed for unemployment purposes, though some child caregivers might be eligible for PUA or family leave benefits.
Being called back to work may be a difficult situation if you arent comfortable returning to work right now. Your best bet may be to discuss the situation with your boss to see if there are any accommodations that can be made, but dont count on continuing to collect unemployment if your work returns.

Basic Requirements That Must Be Met
SUB plans are registered by Service Canada through the SUB program in Bathurst, New Brunswick. Plans must be registered before their effective date. Officers from the SUB program assess employers’ SUB plans against the requirements set out in subsection 37 of the EI Regulations. SUB program Officers also help employers develop SUB plans that meet the requirements of the EI Regulations.
An acceptable plan is one that:
- identifies the group of employees covered
- covers a period of unemployment caused by 1 or a combination of the following:
- temporary stoppage of work
- training
- illness, injury or quarantine
What You Need For Apply For Unemployment Benefits
To apply for Unemployment Insurance benefits, you need to provide personal information including your Social Security number, birth date, home address, email address , and phone number.
You also need information about your employment history from the last 15 months, including:
- Names of all employers, plus addresses and phone numbers
- Reasons for leaving those jobs
- Work start and end dates
- Recall date
You may need additional information in certain situations:
- If you are not a U.S. citizen your Alien Registration number
- If you have children their birth dates and Social Security numbers
- If youre in a union your union name and local number
- If you were in the military your DD-214 Member 4 form. If you dont have it, you can request your DD-214 online.
- If you worked for the federal government your SF8 form
To receive payments by direct deposit, youll also need your bank name, account number, and routing number. Otherwise, the Department of Unemployment Assistance will send you a debit card.
