Do I Have To Pay Taxes On Business Relief Loans

Paycheck Protection Program loans are exempt from federal and state taxes, and small businesses can deduct business expenses that were paid with tax-exempt loan proceeds for both state and federal tax purposes, under the federal appropriations act that reauthorized the PPP program and a February announcement by Murphy.

This decision is designed to help already beleaguered small businesses, which are the majority of recipients of these loans, Murphy said. Its no secret that New Jersey has been one of the hardest hit states by COVID-19 and our small businesses have shouldered the brunt of it. PPP loans helped many stay afloat and this move will provide added benefit to help them weather this storm.

I Dont Have A 1099 From Unemployment What Can I Do

    Q. I havent received a 1099 for my unemployment benefits. I spoke to the New Jersey Department of Labor and they said it will be mailed by Feb. 15. It didnt come. I called again on Feb. 17 and they said it would come by March. Any ideas?

    Working again

    A. We took your question to the Labor Department.

It said it started emailing 1099s on Jan. 19, and within a week, about one million were emailed.

The online Claim Status page was updated to access the most recent 1099s on Jan. 31, said spokeswoman Angela Delli Santi.

Since that date, claimants can view their 1099 via the Check Claim Status tool. Claimants can also request a copy of the original email from the Claim Status page, she said.

When you go online, under the self-service options, you can check a box to show your 1099 on the screen, or check another box to have the form emailed to you.

If those options dont work or arent accessible, claimants can call the call center to receive a hard copy of their 1099 to the address on file, she said.

If You Quit Your Job Because Of Covid

Generally, if you quit your job you are not eligible for unemployment benefits. However, under the new CARES Act Department of Labor guidelines, you may still qualify if you had to quit your job as a direct result of COVID-19. For example:

    • You tested positive for or were diagnosed with COVID-19 and have now recovered. However, you now have health complications that make it impossible for you to do the core functions of your job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
    • You tested positive for or were diagnosed with COVID-19 and have been advised by a health care professional to quarantine and you cant telework.
    • You came into direct contact with someone who tested positive for or was diagnosed with COVID-19 and have been advised by a health care professional to quarantine and you cant telework.

Will I lose my unemployment if I refuse to return to work or quit because I dont feel safe going back? The answer is maybe. While the CARES Act has some exceptions for workers directly impacted by COVID-19, if you are asked to return to work and refuse or quit you may lose your unemployment.

To keep your unemployment you would have to show just cause to refuse or quit. Simply saying that you are afraid to return to work isnt enough. To show just cause, you would need to prove that a reasonable person, under similar circumstances, would refuse or quit.
