NJDOL Issuing New Debit Cards to Unemployment, Temporary Disability and Family Leave Benefits Recipients
TRENTON New Jersey Unemployment Insurance , Temporary Disability Insurance , and Family Leave Insurance claimants who have received benefits on a debit card in the past 18 months will be issued new cards from a new provider this month.
The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development has partnered with New York Community Bank, known in New Jersey as Garden State Community Bank, to provide UI, TDI, and FLI benefits to claimants who receive their benefits on a debit card.
Claimants should look for their new debit card to arrive in the mail starting May 11. The card will arrive in a plain white envelope with an Omaha, NE return address. The envelope might look like junk mail dont throw it away!
Claimants who have provided the Department with cell numbers are receiving text messages to advise them that a new benefits debit card will arrive in the mail.
We are pleased to have a new partner in New York Community Bank, and we look forward to working with them for years to come to reliably deliver benefits to our claimants in the most convenient way for them, said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo.
The current provider, Bank of America, did not bid to renew its contract in New Jersey or other states in 2021, necessitating the transition to a new debit card provider.
Covid 19 Enhanced Benefits Under Cares Act In New Jersey
Under the CARES act, there are three types of federal unemployment assistance now available: Pandemic Unemployment Assistance : expands eligibility for individuals who are typically ineligible forUnemployment benefits, for example independent contractors, and self-employed and gig workers. Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation : provides an additional $600 per week, on top of regular benefits, to all recipients of Unemployment Insurance retroactive to the week ending April 4, 2020. To file a claim for unemployment benefits in New Jersey, the easiest way to do so online. However, people who have military, federal or out-of-state wages, and those employees who earned wages while working for a maritime employer, will need to file by calling a Reemployment Call Center as follows:

If you are filing a New Jersey unemployment claim and do not have access to a computer, you can go to one of the states One-Stop Career Centers to use a computer.
Before you file an initial claim, youll need to gather the following pieces of information:
- Social Security number
- Alien registration number of you are not a U.S. citizen
- DD Form214 if you were are active military duty within the past two years
- Wage information, including W2 forms and paystubs from the past 18 months
- A New Jersey drivers license number or a similar photo identification card

TRENTON The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development has posted step-by-step instructions for the more than 550,000 workers who will go online to claim their weekly unemployment benefits starting Sunday.

Workers must certify their eligibility and availability for work each week in order to continue receiving benefits, in accordance with federal labor department rules, and the Labor Department strongly encourages them to do so online at myunemployment.nj.gov. Certifying in New Jersey means answering seven questions, and attesting to the truthfulness of the answers. Failure to answer all of the questions correctly results in a delay of benefits.
Applying for unemployment can be complicated, so this guide takes workers step-by-step through claiming their weekly benefits, said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. As soon as it became clear new unemployment recipients were hitting a snag, the Department created easier-to-understand instructions.
Half of the errors happen on the first three questions, by claimants saying they are not available for or actively seeking work, or mistakenly saying they refused available work.
Those who are waiting to be recalled to their current job, or are delaying their job search until the national emergency subsides, should answer yes to Question 2.
Managing Your New Jersey Unemployment Benefits
To receive benefits each week, you must certify that you are able to work, are actively seeking work, and will accept work if and when it is offered.
Each week, you will submit weekly certification using the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Developments weekly certification form. With this form, you will answer questions about whether you remain eligible for your weekly benefit, based on your work search and employment activity from the prior week. You must submit your weekly certification form in order to collect benefits for the previous week failure to do so can mean a delay in receiving your benefit payment.

Your claim is dated the Sunday of the week in which you filed your initial claim. The first time you claim benefits will be on a Wednesday, 17 days after your date of claim. Am I Eligible To Claim
In order to claim UI in New Jersey, the NJ Department of Labor stipulates you must have:
- Worked only in New Jersey in the last 18 months, or
- Worked in New Jersey and any other state in the last 18 months, or
- Worked for the federal government and in New Jersey in the last 18 months, or
- Served in the military in the last 18 months and be physically present in New Jersey.
In addition to the above, you will need to have met minimum earnings requirements during your base period. If you claim during April, May or June 2020, your base period will be determined as January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019. If you claim between July through September 2020, your base period will be determined as April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020. If you claim between October 2020 through December 2020, your base period will be determined as July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020.
If you have earned at least $200 per week for 20 or more weeks during your base period, or have earned a minimum of $10,00 in total during the same time, you will be eligible for UI providing your meet all other criteria.
