  • Locked Out: Unemployed Floridians Losing Benefits Over Id Verification

If youre on unemployment and have been locked out of your account, youre not alone.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity says when claimants verify their identity through ID.ME , the departments fraud prevention system has been re-locking their claims.

The DEO says the system should be automatically unlocking claims now, but that it can take 24 to 48 hours to do so.

When Jerry Cutaias friends wife died of COVID-19 last year, he knew he had to do something. He packed up and moved to Florida to help his friend care for his daughter, and he got a job. But that job came to an end as Cutaias high-risk condition meant he had to stay home and go on unemployment during the pandemic.

People rely on this money to pay their bills and survive, Cutaia said. Everything was going fine until last Tuesday when Cutaia logged into his ID.ME account and was asked to verify his identity — he did so and has been locked out ever since.

Cutaia says he then re-verified his identity a total of 84 times over the next seven days — with no help in sight.

He was finally got through to someone on ID.MEs Facebook page and was then let back into his account but said the service needs to come up with a better way of communicating with its claimants.

If wouldve warned me, at least I couldve gotten ahead of the game and started working on it, now its time to pay bills and its locked, Cutaia said.

Force Reset Used On 58000 Accounts Targeted By Cyberthieves

News 6, DEO unlock unemployment account suspended for 17 weeks

Thousands of Florida unemployment accounts were locked without warning this week in a move to counter a potential data breach that targeted nearly 58,000 Department of Economic Opportunity Connect accounts.

The words YOUR ACCOUNT HAS REACHED THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF FAILED LOGIN ATTEMPTS AND HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY LOCKED greeted thousands of men and women who attempted to request weekly benefits from the DEO on Aug. 4.

Kim Renshaw, a married mother of two from Mount Dora, said she immediately thought of the DEO report that confirmed cyber thieves had targeted thousands of accounts between April and July of this year.

If I cant access that money how am I supposed to take care of my family, Renshaw said Monday. I believe hackers are trying to get what money they can.

The DEO strategy was designed to counter thieves trying to hijack the system, according to Emilie Oglesby, the departments Director of Communications.

In an abundance of caution, the Department completed a force reset for PIN numbers for the individuals who were impacted by the data breach, Oglesby said. These claimants will be prompted to reset their PIN when they try to log-in to CONNECT. Oglesby said claimants have the option to receive an email or answer the 3 security questions they set up when they first created their CONNECT account.

Both Renshaw and Neal said they never received a DEO message that their accounts were on the potential hacker hit list.

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA When it comes to unemployment payments, Kasim Perez, tells FOX 4 everything was going smoothly until March of this year.

“My account got compromised so it asked me to verify me. So I did the ID.Me,” he said.

Once he was verified this first time, he says his account was unlocked. But then his payment for that week didn’t come.

“So I went into the deposit area and it shows that it was a different bank account with a different routing number,” he said.

Perez says he has no clue how or why that happened and he says neither did the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

He says after this, his account was locked again, then it was opened briefly for one payment in April 202 and then it was locked again.

“I’ve called and called 100 times. I’ve done the id verify me at least 30 times,” he said.

And it’s not just the DEO he’s calling.

Perez says he’s also tried the Mayor, State congressman, and Governor Ron DeSantis. He added that he even messaged President Biden for help.

“If I didn’t have a girlfriend that was working and other little sources of income, I get SSI for my kids, that’s the only thing that helps get us through. Other than that, we’d be homeless,” he said.

He’s looking for jobs, but in the meantime, he says he needs this money to stay afloat.

And tonight he, like many others in our state, has this message for the DEO.

“Take care of the problem,” he said.

“It was the most horrible job I’ve ever had,” she said.

Deo Introduces New Tool To Verify Identity Following Cyberattack

A cyberattack is causing more issues with the unemployment system.

The state has released a new tool to combat it, not long after a data breach thats kept thousands of people from their benefits.

Florida Department of Economic Opportunity says its new tool will help people verify their identities to get back in. Its called DEO Verify.

Claimants will get an email about how to access it. Florida unemployment advocate Vanessa Brito tweeted recently what the email will look like.

People affected by the cyberattack told us they cant access their accounts because when they try to log in a single time, the website says there have been too many attempts and they have to reset their PIN.

    Then theyre locked out.

So the DEO verify tool helps claimants get a new PIN and access CONNECT.

At the same time, anyone who might have further issues is being directed by DEO to its online Help Center. The problem is it doesnt always ask for a claimants information, so that complaint doesnt end up connected to the account with the issue.

When we brought these concerns to DEO, we were told the Help Center is meant as a self-help tool. Meanwhile, many people say they cant reach DEO over the phone either.

In a recent press release, DEO said it is implementing the following steps to help claimants regain access to their CONNECT accounts:
