Vermont Weathers Rise In Fraudulent Unemployment Claims

In recent weeks, the Vermont Department of Labor has resurfaced in the news over numerous instances of insurance claim fraud.

A notice from the state department was issued on Apr. 20, reminding Vermonters to look out for letters in their mailbox that may or may not have replicated their personal information in order to file a fake claim.

A week later, the state’s Labor Department stated that it had temporarily disabled its online unemployment initial claim application on Apr. 28, in response to “a sharp increase in fraudulent claims”.

The application freeze is applicable only to first-time claim applications and not ongoing claims.

Laid off Vermonters who are filing unemployment claims for the first time are asked to contact the department’s Claimant Assistance Center at 214-3330. The call center is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Outdated Forms Cause Confusion

There was some confusion because said you have to update us on the job hunt every two weeks, and I knew that wasn’t the case, Nick says. I knew specifically it to the state but it was still on the website.

Per a handbook published by the state on April 17, questions about work search requirements were kept as is on the unemployment web site, in order to cater to residents who are receiving benefits outside of the scope of the coronavirus.

“Because unemployment insurance is a temporary bridge while an individual tries to find other employment, our system provides this question for claimants who started receiving UI benefits prior to COVID-19,” it reads. “However, with the changes in state and federal law to assist during COVID-19, you can answer the question honestly if you answer no you will not be penalized for not completing a job search.”

The application itself is often an interactive form that people fill out by logging into their state’s unemployment insurance portal. States might be less inclined to change the language in their forms since the waiver is a temporary emergency measure states will presumably reinstate the job search requirement when the crisis passes. Plus, the abrupt nature of it all means some states might not have had time to update their forms to reflect the waiver.

“There was an issue with claims still showing work search requirements, but we believe all those have been corrected,” the spokesperson told Money in an email.

Records That Prove Employment

If youre working at a more established company, your HR or Personnel department has likely already dealt with requests for proof of employment and may have a system in place for handling these requests. If its a smaller company or youre working as a contractor, then you may need to gather the requisite records yourself.

How To Protect Yourself

Verify the job opening directly through the company. Dont use the contact information provided by a stranger. Instead, call or go directly to the actual company’s website for contact information to confirm the job posting.

If you find multiple websites for the same company or the web address is just a few letters off from an actual company website URL, it may have been spoofed.

If a job posting appears on job boards, but not on the company website, it may be a scam.

Double-check the email address of the hiring manager. Does it match the web addresses used by the actual company? Scammers may use an address that looks similar.

You can also do an internet search with the name of the employer and the word scam to look for reports of similar job scams.

If a new employer sends you a check and asks you to send money to a third party – either through a wire transfer, cash app or gift cards, dont do it.

Official Data Chaos: Bls Outdoes Itself With Its Bs

SCAMMED FOR $10,000 – Fake Job Scam – 4 Weeks Unemployed

So now, the Department of Labor reported this morning that the total number of people on unemployment insurance under all state and federal unemployment programs, including gig workers, surged by 937,810 people to a record 31.5 million.

At the same time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics wanted to make us believe by hook or crook that the number of unemployed people fell by 3.2 million in June, to 17.8 million.

The difference between those actually receiving unemployment insurance and those that the BLS claims are unemployed has today exploded to 13.7 million. In other words, the BLS has under-reported the number of unemployed by at least 13.7 million people.

No one knows how many jobs were created on net, but it wasnt 4.8 million as the BLS tried to make us believe, or even a smaller positive number, but a negative number, with more jobs being shed on net, because the number of people still receiving unemployment insurance since the end of May has surged by 1.3 million people, according to the Labor Department.

The BLS has thereby outdone itself in generating BS. I dont know whether it is under political pressure to produce this BS or whether it is just incompetent with much of its staff not working properly due to the pandemic. Whatever the cause, the BLS has lost all remaining credibility with this report and has totally fallen off the deep end.
