Wa State Unemployment How Much Will I Get

Just because youâre unemployed or lost your job doesnât mean youâll collect benefits.

Thereâs a big gap between states when measuring the share of jobless people who are receiving unemployment benefits.

North Carolinaâs ârecipiency rateâ is the nationâs lowest just 10.5% of unemployed workers collect unemployment insurance. In New Jersey, itâs nearly 52% the nationâs highest share.

There are several factors at play here.

Not all unemployed workers are eligible to collect benefits, for example. Some, like the self-employed and independent contractors, couldnât generally collect prior to the relief lawâs expansion of eligibility criteria. Others may have been fired for cause rather than laid off.

But some states with small shares may make it more challenging relative to other states to apply for and receive benefits, thereby dragging down their recipiency rates, labor economists said.

Unemployed workers may also be dissuaded from applying for benefits if they think their weekly benefit checks will be small and last for a relatively short time, which would also reduce the percentage.

How Long Will I Receive Benefits

Usually, most states permit an individual to obtain unemployment for a maximum of 26 weeks or half the benefit year. A benefit year is a period when your claim is established, and it will remain open for one year .

A few states have standardized benefit duration, while most have different durations depending upon the worker. In a state with varied duration, the benefit year may probably include less than 26 payable weeks.

The calculation is done using this formula 26 x WBA or 1/3 BPW. Generally, the smallest amount is considered. WBA is the Weekly Benefit Amount, so 26 x WBA would be the regular weekly program. 1/3 BPW refers to the Base Period Wages, so if a person did not succeed to earn more than three times the standard benefit amount, they will be suitable for fewer weeks of coverage.

In Washington state, this is how your weekly benefit amount is calculated:

Step 1: We add together the gross wages from the two highest quarters in your base year, then we divide by 2.

Step 2: Multiply the amount in step 1 by 0.0385.

  • If this is more than Washingtons official maximum weekly benefit amount of $999, you will get $999.
  • If this is at least $317 and not more than $999, you will get this amount, rounded down to the nearest dollar.
  • If this is less than $317, we go to step 3.

Step 3: We calculate your weekly wage. We take the amount calculated in step 1, multiply by 4 and divide by 52 weeks. That equals your estimated weekly wage.

Step 4: Then we compare your estimated weekly wage to $317. You will get the lesser amount, rounded down to the nearest dollar.

Requirements For Qualifying For Unemployment

Eligibility requirements to qualify for unemployment compensation vary from state to state. However, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are two main criteria that must be met in order to qualify:

1. You must be unemployed through no fault of your own. In this case, a persons unemployment must be caused by an external factor beyond his or her control, such as a layoff or a furlough. Quitting your job with a good reason or being fired for misconduct in the workplace will most likely render you ineligible for unemployment benefits.

There may be an exception, however, if wrongful termination or constructive discharge played a role in your termination from employment.

2. You must meet your states requirements for time worked or wages earned during a set period of time. This marker can be confusing, but its safe to assume that if you had a long-term job that you lost unexpectedly or without just cause, you would meet your states requirements.
