A Guide To Unemployment Benefits In Georgia

Discussing how long pandemic unemployment benefits could last

In the state of Georgia, unemployment insurance benefits are administered by the Georgia Department of Labor . Citizens who have become unemployed through no fault of their own, and who are ready and able to go to work, may meet Georgia unemployment eligibility to receive this help. It is provided to individuals at no cost.

To collect unemployment benefits, you must register with the GDOL and start a job search effort that will be monitored by the department to ensure that claimants are meeting requirements.

Your State Is Overwhelmed With New Jobless Benefits Applications

The most likely reason why you havent yet received your unemployment check is probably also the most frustrating: State unemployment agencies have been inundated with new filings and are hard-pressed to process them in a timely manner. This could be the underlying reason why you havent yet received your payment, whether youre marked as approved or still pending.

Its taking administrators a lot longer to verify your information, work history, earnings and reason for leaving hoops and hurdles before your checks start coming. Many states are also using outdated systems and technology to process these claims. States are also having to keep existing payments flowing while still figuring out how to process new claims.

The coronavirus pandemics economic upheaval has been unprecedented. Nearly 6.9 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits during the week that ended on March 28, the highest on record and far eclipsing the previous surge of 695,000 in October of 1982. By the end of May, almost 1 in 4 U.S. workers would apply for weekly benefits and would hold in the millions for five straight months.

What If I Havent Filed A Tax Return

TAXPAYERS had until May 17 to file an extension if they needed more time to submit their returns.

If you didnt file a tax return or an extension, but should have, you need to take action or the penalties you face may increase.

If you file your return over 60 days late, youll have to pay a $435 fine or 100% of the tax you owe whichever is less.

However, there is no penalty for filing a late return after the tax deadline if a refund is due, said the IRS.

If you didnt file and owe tax, file a return as soon as you can and pay as much as possible to reduce penalties and interest.

You wont have to pay the penalties if you can show reasonable cause for the failure to do so on time we explain how in our guide.

How To Track Your Refund And Check Your Tax Transcript

The first way to get clues about your refund is to try the IRS online tracker applications: The Wheres My Refund tool can be accessed here. If you filed an amended return, you can check the Amended Return Status tool.

If those tools dont provide information on the status of your unemployment tax refund, another way to see if the IRS processed your refund is by viewing your tax records online. You can also request a copy of your transcript by mail or through the IRS automated phone service by calling 1-800-908-9946.

Heres how to check your tax transcript online:

1. Visit IRS.gov and log in to your account. If you havent opened an account with the IRS, this will take some time as youll have to take multiple steps to confirm your identity.

2. Once logged in to your account, youll see the Account Home page. Click View Tax Records.

3. On the next page, click the Get Transcript button.

4. Here youll see a drop-down menu asking the reason you need a transcript. Select Federal Tax and leave the Customer File Number field empty. Click the Go button.

5. The following page will show a Return Transcript, Records of Account Transcript, Account Transcript and Wage & IncomeTranscript for the last four years. Youll want the 2020 Account Transcript.

6. This will open a PDF of your transcript: Focus on the Transactions section. What youre looking for is an entry listed as Refund issued, and it should have a date in late May or June.

Why Havent I Received My Unemployment Benefits

With no help in sight, people like Harris are turning to elected officials, lawyers, and even social media for help. Harris is part of the Unofficial California Unemployment Help Facebook group, which has drawn more than 56,000 members since it was started in March.

When asked via email what is causing the delays, the California EDD cited unprecedented demand for unemployment benefits. The EDD says it has processed 11.9 million combined claims for the regular unemployment insurance program, as well as the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.

Many states operate unemployment systems that are sorely out of date or didnt have the staff to handle this deluge of applications. The states are catching up, but if there is anything wrong with your application, you could get lost in the mix, says Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the progressive, independent think tank The Century Foundation.

If your application gets flagged and your states unemployment agency lacks the resources to resolve your issue, you could get stuck, says Stettner, who has over 20 years of experience as an unemployment insurance policy advocate.

This is what happened to Mikaelah Pagan, who found her way to the same Facebook group as Harris. She says she filed for unemployment with the EDD the day she lost her food service job and waited four months to receive benefits.

How Many Weeks Of Regular State Unemployment Benefits Are Available

Most states offer at least 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits, or half a year, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements and can demonstrate that you are looking for work.

That may seem like a lot. But as of September, nearly one in five displaced workers had been unemployed for at least 27 weeks. And that number is likely to climb. The number of those long-term unemployed workers rose by 781,000 in September alone, the largest month-over-month increase ever recorded, according to Michelle Evermore, senior policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project.

And seven states currently provide even fewer weeks of regular unemployment benefits, including: Idaho , Missouri and South Carolina , Arkansas , Alabama and Florida and North Carolina, which each provide up to 12 weeks of unemployment insurance.

Floridas economy, which had a booming leisure and hospitality sector pre-pandemic, has been hit particularly hard this year: it lost nearly 1.18 million jobs from February to April. Just a little over half, or 639,000, of those jobs have since been recovered. Last month, the unemployment rate in Florida was 7.6 percent, with 769,859 people claiming unemploymentthe most of any state except California, New York and Texas.

North Carolina, which also provides the shortest period of regular unemployment benefits, had nearly 357,000 unemployed residents last month and an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent, which was up from the month before.

What To Know About The 2020 Unemployment Tax Break

The United States of Unemployment Benefits: Here

The first thing to know is that refunds would only go to taxpayers who received jobless benefits last year and paid taxes on that money before the provision in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The tax break is for those who earned less than $150,000 in adjusted gross income and for unemployment insurance received during 2020. At this stage, unemployment compensation received this calendar year will be fully taxable on 2021 tax returns.

The $10,200 tax break is the amount of income exclusion for single filers, not the amount of the refund . The amount of the refund will vary per person depending on overall income, tax bracket and how much earnings came from unemployment benefits. So far, the refunds are averaging more than $1,600.

However, not everyone will receive a refund. The IRS can seize the refund to cover a past-due debt, such as unpaid federal or state taxes and child support. One way to know if a refund has been issued is to wait for the letter that the IRS is sending taxpayers whose returns are corrected. Those letters, issued within 30 days of the adjustment, will tell you if it resulted in a refund or if it was used to offset debt.

Refunds will go out as a direct deposit if you provided bank account information on your 2020 tax return. A direct deposit amount will likely show up as IRS TREAS 310 TAXREF. Otherwise, the refund will be mailed as a paper check to whatever address the IRS has on hand.

What Are The Unemployment Qualifications In Indiana

How long will it take to receive unemployment benefits?

To qualify for unemployment benefits in Indiana, you must meet several qualifications before being granted unemployment payments. There are three specific requirements mandated by the Indiana unemployment department that impact whether or not you qualify for unemployment:

Requirement #1: You are able to work.

Indiana unemployment laws require you to be able to find new work before you can receive benefits.

  • You must be able to work.
  • You must be available to work.
  • You must be actively searching for a full-time job.

Requirement #2: You lost your job through no fault of your own.

  • Did you quit your job voluntarily? If so, and your reason for quitting was not work-related, you cannot receive benefits. Work-related reasons for quitting that still allow you to qualify for unemployment benefits include the following:
  • Worksite safety violations
  • Unreasonable changes to your work duties or conditions
  • Military service
  • Moving to follow a spouse who has accepted a new job
  • Harassment, family violence, or domestic abuse

Requirement #3: You earned enough during your base period.

For your claim to be valid, you must have earned at least 1.5 times the amount of your highest-quarter wages in your base period and have made at least $2,500 in the final six months of that period.

Your Claim Check Or Debit Card Was Lost Or Stolen

Mail can be misdelivered. And when someone receives misdelivered mail, they dont always do the right thing and track down its owner. Another problem is that many people have unsecured mailboxes that dont lock, and thieves sometimes go around stealing mail from them.

It can be hard to know if your unemployment payment may have been lost or stolen, especially if you cant get hold of someone at the unemployment department to verify when it was mailed. Going forward, consider using USPS Informed Delivery, a free service that you can sign up for at the U.S. Postal Services website. It can help you track the mail that youre supposed to receive each day and see if something that was mailed to you never arrived.

It can take a long time to get a replacement payment from your unemployment department. It may need to investigate and cancel checks or debit cards before issuing new ones.
