Dont Qualify For An Sep Heres How To Get Covered Anyway

If youre reading this and you missed the window for signing up for a special enrollment period and its not yet open enrollment, which happens in the fall then you may still be able to get health insurance.

First, try Medicaid. Most states expanded Medicaid coverage thanks to guidelines under the Affordable Care Act. If youve never qualified before but live in an expansion state, check with your states Medicaid program. Even if you dont live in a state that expanded Medicaid, it doesnt hurt to check if you qualify. This joint federal-state program is designed to help people with low incomes get health insurance.

And if you have kids, look into CHIP in your state. The Childrens Health Insurance Program, called by different names in each state, provides health insurance for children whose parents dont qualify for Medicaid.

You could enroll in your former jobs COBRA coverage, but these plans are typically too expensive for most families. Thats because youre paying the full cost of your job-based insurance without the benefit of employer contributions.

Outside of open enrollment, a special enrollment period, a federal program or COBRA, you wont find major medical insurance readily available. In that case, we recommend short term health insurance.

Get On Your Spouse’s Domestic Partner’s Or Parent’s Health Insurance

If your spouse or domestic partner’s job offers health insurance coverage to employees’ spouses and dependents, getting added to their plan can be a simple solution.

A spouse’s or partner’s health insurance is a known quantity: Your spouse is already familiar with the benefits, costs and deductibles, and knows the level of coverage, which can help in assessing its value. On the other hand, if their coverage doesn’t fit your needs, you may want to explore other options.

Normally, you can enroll in health insurance only once a year, during “open enrollment,” which takes place in the fall. However, leaving your job is considered a qualifying event, and gives you 30 days to sign up for your spouse’s or partner’s plan no matter the time of year. You’ll need to complete an application and may need to provide proof that you are losing your health insurance.

Special Enrollment Periods Are For Everyone

The ACA also created an open enrollment period for buying health insurance. If you dont get coverage through work and need a private health plan, youve got one time during the year to sign up. It runs from November 1st through December 15th nationwide, though some states have later deadlines.

If you miss the deadline for the year, you usually have to wait until the next enrollment period. But thats where a special enrollment period comes in.

Major life events, like having a baby or getting married, can trigger a special enrollment period. One of those qualifying life events is losing your job.

Special enrollment periods are available to everyone. As long as you meet the requirements for a qualifying life event, you can apply for health insurance during an SEP. You usually have 60 days from the date of that event to sign up.

Note that this has nothing to do with the current pandemic. The special enrollment period for losing your job is just part of Obamacare already. So if youre reading this in August and you recently lost your job, go ahead and see if you qualify to use an SEP to get health insurance.

Thats why we said at the beginning that people who lost their jobs on or after April 5, 2020 are rapidly running out of time to take advantage of this special enrollment period. At the time of this post on June 4th, its been 60 days since that date.

In fact, if youre reading this after June 4th, youve likely already missed the window. Sorry about that!

Using The Affordable Health Insurance Exemption

How come I

The Affordable Care Act sets a limit on the costs of health insurance. If an employer plan costs more the 9.66 percent of the employees household income, then it is not affordable the employee can reject an unaffordable plan and buy insurance on the marketplace.

And for people with existing health problems, short term plans arent great.

But if youre healthy, youve missed the enrollment periods for major medical or you just need something to bridge a gap between comprehensive benefits, short term plans might work for you. Need more info? Check our article on the myths of short term health insurance.

Depending on your income and state, you may qualify for Medicaid, the national health insurance program for low-income individuals and families that’s jointly funded by federal and state governments. Medicaid enrollment takes place year-round and is based on monthly income, not annual income, and it’s essentially free for people who are eligible. You’re more likely to qualify if you live in one of the 37 states and D.C. that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that nearly 6 million adults right now qualify for Medicaid but aren’t enrolled.

What Is The Cheapest Health Insurance

Short-term and catastrophic coverage plans are usually the cheapest health insurance options for anyone who has recently lost their job. However, there are downsides to both. Short-term coverage only lasts for up to one year and is banned or restricted in some states. I Was Furloughed By My Employer But They Have Now Reopened And Asked Me To Return To My Job Can I Remain On Unemployment

No. As a general matter, individuals receiving regular unemployment compensation must act upon any referral to suitable employment and must accept any offer of suitable employment. Barring unusual circumstances, a request that a furloughed employee return to his or her job very likely constitutes an offer of suitable employment that the employee must accept.

While eligibility for PUA does not turn on whether an individual is actively seeking work, it does require that the individual be unemployed, partially employed, or unable or unavailable to work due to certain circumstances that are a direct result of COVID-19 or the COVID-19 public health emergency. In the situation outlined here, an employee who had been furloughed because his or her employer has closed the place of employment would potentially be eligible for PUA while the employer remained closed, assuming the closure was a direct result of the COVID-19 public health emergency and other qualifying conditions are satisfied. However, as soon as the business reopens and the employee is recalled for work, as in the example above, eligibility for PUA would cease unless the individual could identify some other qualifying circumstance outlined in the CARES Act.
