How Much Money Are You Eligible To Receive For Unemployment

[Help] filing unemployment claim online (file, payment ...

Unemployment benefits aren’t designed to replace all of the income you were making, and the amount you are eligible for varies by state. For example, New Jersey offers the highest benefit limit at $713 per week, Missouri’s is $320, New York’s is $504, Mississippi’s is $320, and Louisiana offers the lowest at $247. Some states offer higher amounts for applicants with dependents.

Each state also has its own minimums for earned wages and time worked within a base period, which affects whether you qualify for unemployment benefits. Your base period is determined by the last four or five calendar quarters you worked before filing for unemployment. Within that base period, you take the largest amount of wages you earned in a quarter and divide it by 26.

Remember that under the CARES Act, qualified Americans will receive an extra $600 in addition to their state-given unemployment benefits through July 31.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance And Extended State Benefits

Independent contractors, freelancers and gig workers who wouldnât have qualified for claims before will be able to get the same UI benefits as those who qualify for the PEUC program. This act has loosened rules and eligibility considerably and includes:

    • Pandemic Unemployment Assistance â Provides at least 50 weeks of benefits for freelance, gig and contract workers who would normally NOT have been eligible for state unemployment programs. Workers who get PUA are not concurrently eligible for PEUC or Extended State Unemployment benefits. Unemployment claims for PUA will be backdated and paid retroactively to the first week during the PUA period in which an employee was unemployed, partially unemployed, or unable and unavailable to work due to COVID-19
    • Extended State Unemployment Benefits â Provides an additional 13 additional weeks of benefits when a state is experiencing high unemployment. Some states have also enacted a voluntary program to pay up to 7 additional weeks during periods of extremely high unemployment. Note that extended state benefits are only available after people have collected all regular Unemployment Insurance benefits as well as any PEUC benefits they were eligible for. But if the unemployment rates drops below high unemployment thresholds in a state, the EB benefit coverage weeks may drop or cease. See the current levels of EB benefits available by state.

What Are The Tax Implications Of Unemployment

How Do I File My Weekly Unemployment Claim Online In ...

Your unemployment insurance is considered taxable income, so you must report it on your federal tax return in the income section.

Taxes are not taken out of unemployment benefits, but when filing your federal and state taxes the following year, you must report the money you received. The IRS will send you Form 1099-G, which includes the taxable unemployment benefits you received in the previous tax year.

“One benefit, however, is not having to pay payroll taxes like Social Security and Medicare on these payments,” said Riley Adams, a certified public accountant and owner of Young and the Invested, a personal finance website. “Should you so choose, you may also elect to have taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits when filing for unemployment insurance.”

When Could An Extension Be Confirmed

The Biden Administration has now confirmed that they wont push at a federal level or via executive order to extend enhanced unemployment programs past the September 6th expiration date.

They are instead encouraging states with high unemployment or hit hard by COVID-19 Delta to use existing ARPA stimulus funding to extend and expand traditional state unemployment benefits for as long as needed. You can see more on this in this video.

States will have to provide guidance on expanded benefits or move to state extended benefit programs prior to early September to ensure a continuation of benefits. So stay tuned as updates come out and I will update on state-by-state basis.
