Claimant Identities Protected Under New Security Protocol

An ambitious security protocol launched by the Department of Economic Opportunity is aimed to help protect claimants in Florida.

The move came amid daily security battles between imposters and state unemployment claimants.

Effective immediately each claimant must have an individual email address associated with their reemployment assistance account. Under the new protocol, claimants may not share email addresses.

The DEO tells News 6 it is encouraging claimants to create a new email account if they share an email address with another reemployment assistance claimant.

In addition to multi-factor authentication, reemployment assistance claimants will be required to create an account and verify their identity with ID.me. The DEO wants claimants, who have not previously done so, to create and verify their identity with ID.me before completing the multi-factor process.

A six-point update was issued Wednesday including a link to access your account with the multi-factor authentication process.

Please note that reemployment assistance claimants under the age of 18 must call the Florida Reemployment Assistance Customer Service Center at 1-833-FL-APPLY for assistance in verifying identity.

File Your Florida Unemployment Claim

Within one week of becoming unemployed, you should begin the claims process to receive your Reemployment Assistance benefits. The date your application is finished determines when you will begin receiving benefits. Claims always begin with the Sunday prior to the completion of the application. For example, an application completed on Wednesday will take effect on the Sunday before that Wednesday.

All claims in Florida must be completed online. The process should take approximately 30-60 minutes to complete.

Those who need assistance because of disabilities, legal reasons, computer illiteracy or language barriers should call 1-800-681-8102.

Once your claim is filed, you will receive a confirmation notice that your claim has been received. You must request benefit payment no later than seven days from your scheduled report date. If your claim is accepted, it will take two to four weeks to receive your first payment. The week you file your claim is a “waiting week” during which no benefits are paid.

If you do not receive a confirmation notice, call the Claims Assistance Center toll free at 1-800-204-2418.

Recently, the Department of Economic Opportunity experienced a data breach of tens of thousands of accounts and many accounts were apparently affected.

Laurie Daniele of Boca Raton also was locked out recently.

“It asks me for my claimant ID and password and to get in, my PIN. Once I do that, it goes to , ‘You tried too many times, youre locked out,'” Daniele said.

The DEO offers a help page for users experiencing difficulty using the website.

How Long Can I Claim Florida Unemployment Benefits And How Much Will I Get

How long you can receive Florida unemployment benefits varies depending on unemployment rates at the time. As of 2021, the maximum time you can receive benefits is 19 weeks.

Your weekly benefit amount is calculated by dividing your total earnings in the quarter in which you were paid the most by 26. You will then receive this amount per week, or the weekly maximum of $275, whichever is lower. Your total benefit amount is calculated by dividing your base period total by 4, but it cannot exceed the maximum total benefit amount of $5225.
