Healthcare For The Unemployed In The Us

Don't Miss

Results Of Logit Regression

US healthcare workers face growing unemployment

The results of multiple logit regressions presented in Table 3 were consistent with those in Table 2. Regarding unmet needs in medical services, the odds ratio between respondents with and without job losses was 1.4 for those with income below the 200% poverty line. The interaction terms between job loss and income were statistically significant and positive .

As suggested by previous research,3436 the estimated coefficient of the interaction term in nonlinear models may not provide accurate information about interactive effects. Therefore, we further calculated the average marginal effects of job loss on unmet needs in medical services. The estimated marginal effects of job loss were consistent with the coefficients reported in Table 3. Controlling for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, job loss increased the probability of reporting unmet needs in medical services by 3.8 percentage points for families with and income-to-needs ratio below 2, 6.1 percentage points for those with an income-to-needs ratio between 2 and 4, and 6.4 percentage points for those with an income-to-needs ratio above 4.

Average marginal effect of job loss on unmet health care needs by income: Survey of Income and Program Participation, 2008.

Note. We created an income-to-needs ratio by categorizing the sample into 3 groups: families with average income < 200% monthly poverty threshold, 200%400% monthly threshold, and > 400% monthly threshold .

Effects On Health And Mortality

Unemployment can have adverse health effects. One study indicated that a 1% increase in the unemployment rate can increase mortality among working-aged males by 6%. Similar effects were not noted for women or the elderly, who had lower workforce attachment. The mortality increase was mainly driven by circulatory health issues . Another study concluded that: “Losing a job because of an establishment closure increased the odds of fair or poor health by 54%, and among respondents with no preexisting health conditions, it increased the odds of a new likely health condition by 83%. This suggests that there are true health costs to job loss, beyond sicker people being more likely to lose their jobs.” Extended job loss can add the equivalent of ten years to a persons age.

Studies have also indicated that worsening economic conditions can be associated with lower mortality across the entire economy, with slightly lower mortality in the much larger employed group offsetting higher mortality in the unemployed group. For example, recessions might include fewer drivers on the road, reducing traffic fatalities and pollution.

Health insurance during unemployment may seem unaffordable, but you do have additional options if a comprehensive plan with subsidies, or short-term health insurance, is still unaffordable. Medicaid and CHIP programs are available in each state for individuals who cannot afford other health insurance. The eligibility for these programs will depend on the state you live in. Job Growth Projections 20162026

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 24, 2017 its projections of job growth by industry and job type over the 20162026 period. Healthcare was the industry expected to add the most jobs, driven by demand from an aging population. The top three occupations were: personal care aides with 754,000 jobs added or a 37% increase home health aids with 425,600 or 47% and software developers at 253,400 or 30.5%.

Medicaid Health Insurance: Who Is Eligible

If youre unemployed, you may qualify for Medicaid depending on where you live. Thirty-eight states and Washington, D.C., expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. In those places, you can qualify for Medicaid based on your income alone if you earn 138% or less of the federal poverty level or $17,774 per year for an individual. The more people in your household, the higher the income cutoff.

In the 12 states that have opted not to expand Medicaid, your income wont be enough on its own to qualify. Youll need to meet other requirements, such as being a caregiver for a dependent child.

When you apply for coverage through HealthCare.gov, the government will see if youre eligible for Medicaid in your state and if any children in your household qualify for the Childrens Health Insurance Program . CHIP is for families that earn too much to be eligible for Medicaid but still may not be able to afford private health insurance.

Parents Or Spouses Health Insurance Plan

If youre not on the same plan as your spouse or parent, youre missing out on one of the most effective health insurance plans.

If youre married and unemployed and your spouse has a reliable insurance plan via their employer, you can easily be included in their policy.

Alternatively, if youre 26 years old or younger, youre eligible to be added to your parents health plan.

How to get it: Its likely that your job loss counts as a qualifying life event, which means your spouse or parent can add you to their plan outside of the annual open enrollment period. This typically has to happen within 30 days of losing your coverage.

If it happens to be open enrollment time, simply have your parent or spouse add you as a beneficiary when they sign up for coverage. No qualifying event needed. Easy!

How The Autumn Statement Will Impact Households From Single Mums To Married Pensioners

Freezing of thresholds means those receiving a wage rise will pay more tax, while benefits increase by the rate of inflation

The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has pressed the button on a new wave of austerity in an autumn statement that will bring to an end eight years of improved living standards.

Hunt left the three main tax rates unchanged 20p basic, 40p higher and 45p additional rate with the first £12,750 of income tax-free and the 40% rate starting at £50,270. However, he did lower the threshold at which Britons start paying the 45p top rate of income tax to £125,140 a measure that will pull 250,000 people into the top rate.

In the 2021 spring budget, the then chancellor, Rishi Sunak, set up a four-year freeze on personal tax thresholds that began in April. Over time, this drags more low-income households into paying basic-rate tax and those with earnings nearing £50,000 into the higher 40% rate. Now Hunt has gone even further, by prolonging this deep freeze for a further two years, meaning no change until 2028.

However, the state pension and benefits will rise 10.1% from April, in line with Septembers inflation rate, and the national living wage for over-23s will increase from £9.50 an hour to £10.42.

This is how the autumn statement announcement will impact different households.

  • Unemployed adults were more likely to be non-Hispanic black, to have less than a high school education, and to have family income below the poverty level in the previous year than employed adults .
