Generally, youll have money withheld from your paycheck for several types of taxes: income, Social Security and Medicare.

Combined, the Social Security and Medicare taxes are called Federal Insurance Contributions Act taxes, and they can be up to 7.65% of your pay. But FICA taxes dont apply to unemployment benefits.

You have to pay federal income taxes on your unemployment benefits, as well as any applicable local and state income taxes.

Similar to how you receive a W-2 or 1099-MISC tax form with your wages and income and use those to prepare your tax return, your state will send you the IRS copies of Form 1099-G with a record of how much you received in unemployment. Youll include this amount in your income for the year when you file your taxes.

Through July 31, 2020, your taxable unemployment benefits may include an additional $600 a week as part of Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act stimulus. The extra benefit also counts as taxable income. The separate one-time stimulus check that was also a component of the CARES Act is not, however, subject to income taxes.

Withholding Taxes From Your Payments

If you are receiving benefits, you may have federal income taxes withheld from your unemployment benefit payments. Tax withholding is completely voluntary withholding taxes is not required. If you ask us to withhold taxes, we will withhold 10 percent of the gross amount of each payment before sending it to you.

To start or stop federal tax withholding for unemployment benefit payments:

  • Choose your withholding option when you apply for benefits online through Unemployment Benefits Services.
  • Review and change your withholding status by logging onto Unemployment Benefits Services and selecting IRS Tax Information from the Quick Links menu on the My Home page.
  • Review and change your withholding status by calling Tele-Serv and selecting Option 2, then Option 5.

    Do I Have To Pay Taxes On The Extra $600

    The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act provided for the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program when President Trump signed it into law on March 27, 2020. It provided an additional $600 per week in unemployment compensation per recipient through July 2020. That money is also taxable after the first $10,200.

    You might be paid up if you arranged to have income tax withheld from your benefits, but federal law caps withholding on benefits at 10%. That might not be enough to offset all taxes owed if you had additional income during the year.

    Not all states were technologically prepared to withhold anything from that extra $600 portion. Their unemployment systems simply werent up to the task, and many initially collapsed during the first weeks of increased visits to their sites.

    Youll still have to pay tax on benefits you received over $10,200 if you asked for withholding and it didnt happen.

    This 10% withholding cap prevents you from having extra money withheld now to try to compensate for not having anything withheld earlier in the year. You can ask for extra withholding from your paychecks, however, if you return to work.

    About The Unemployment Compensation Exemption

    The American Rescue Plan Act, which was enacted in March, exempts up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits received in 2020 from federal income tax for households reporting an adjusted gross income less than $150,000 on their 2020 tax return. If you received more than $10,200 in unemployment compensation last year, any amount over $10,200 is still taxable.

    The IRS has identified over 10 million people who filed their tax returns before the plan became law and is reviewing those returns to determine the correct amount of tax on their unemployment compensation. For those affected, this could result in a refund, a reduced tax bill, or no change at all.

    The IRS started recalculating impacted tax returns with returns from single taxpayers who had relatively simple returns, such as those filed by people who didnt claim children as dependents or any refundable tax credits. The tax agency then shifted to joint returns filed by married couples who are eligible for an exemption up to $20,400 and others with more complex returns.

    Remember, though, that the tax exemption only applies to unemployment benefits received in 2020. So, if you receive unemployment compensation in 2021 or beyond, expect to pay federal tax on the amount you get.

    You must report your unemployment benefits on your tax return even if you dont receive a Form 1099-G. Go to your states website if you didn’t receive one and think you should havesome states may not mail out paper versions of the form. The form is usually available electronically, but you can also call your state unemployment office.

    Reporting and investigating an incorrect or fraudulent Form 1099-G in your name will probably slow down the processing of your tax return.
